Thread: Can the plane take off ?

  1. #1

Can the plane take off ?

A plane is standing on a runway that is made of a large conveyor belt. The plane fires up its engines, but as it moves forward, the conveyor belt senses the speed of the plane's wheels and moves at exactly the same speed in the opposite direction. Can the plane take off?

I've seen 100 page threads on this and I know there are a couple of pilots here ...and a few smart people too....

    So...can it?

Edit> I'm no rocking scientist but if there is no lift....no way

It would take off. The thrust is what moves the planes, not the wheels.

Plane takes off, conveyor cant stop the plane, wheels spin twice as fast, plane takes off at the same speed as always.

    game over.

wheels can't spin twice as fast if belt under it moves in opposite direction.

    Ok, try this.

Plane engines turn on, it starts moving, wheels are going clockwise, conveyor matches speed, wheels are still going clockwise. You would need to create thrust in the opposite direction to make the wheels turn in the opposite direction.
