    Hot water tank just ruptured

Damnit, just as we were packing out bags. Waiting for the harass to show up with a replacement.

    Get the duct tape!

I shouldn't joke, mine is 14 years old and ready to die any time. Just added a water softener, from what I hear once the salt water removes the scale from the tank it will most likely reveal a hole in the tank.

It just might... I don't see a ground wire on that thing. Come to think of it I never did see any in the house's I've lived in over there.

Something I've read is that really rusty thing you saw on your tank is called a "sacraficial anode", I think it's a magnesium rod. Anyway, if you replace that every few years it takes the punishment instead of your tank. Nobody knows to replace it so after about 5 years your tank starts getting punished instead of the rod.

I don't think that mine was ever replaced, if I tried to replace it after 14 years it would probably just break apart when I tried to unscrew it. That's what I've read online and a plumber confirmed that.

Gotta love the simplicity of electric water heating. When I look at my tank the screwing around that has to be done with gas lines and exhaust I would have to say that the installation isn't a 5 minute job.
