yep, I hadn't restarted yet. All avg related things are gone

I think I've gotten my puter as fixed up as it's gonna get (unless I could figure out which of those processes I could get rid of, if any)

I downloaded AVG, scanned with it, it found a couple minor things. then I downloaded Nod. I've uninstalled AVG and am just going with Nod, I've run crap cleaner, defragged again, the whole 9 yards. The good news is, my lappy IS noticably faster, thanks to all the help I got from people here

I still recommend what ghettoside suggested: wipe out the laptop and do a clean install of everything. I've done it with mine and it's amazing how much better your computer will run...

I don't know where my disks are.. if I can find them I"ll consider doing that as well.

Actually, if you have the money, you can get the Pro disk on eBay for around $140. Your drivers should be available online with the various manufacturers, which would be free. Just make sure you have them all before you start, or, at least, have access to the Internet via another computer, in case anything goes wrong.

Trust me, you'll love your laptop after this...

Here's a tip in the right direction...

    http://cgi.ebay.com/Microsoft-Window...em130068657198

Pretty good deal, considering I paid nearly $175 for mine two years ago.

I'd try to find the discs first before spending $. Good link tho

Maybe 9mm would wanna invest in Vista instead later...

Shes buying a new laptop, why worry about paying for XP discs for this one? and upgrading to vista on a rig that runs XP "a little slow" is liek upgrading from an older SUV to a Hot and Sexy Lamborghini... thats out of gas and stuck on railroad tracks.

YARDofSTUF is right, I"m buying a new lappy in a couple months, so I don't want to spend money on disks or anything like that. I just wanted to speed this old puter up as much as I can in the meantime. It even seems to be opening webpages a bit faster, too

I meant if she was gonna buy an OS, may as well buy the latest one.

If she added some RAM I beleive her lappy would run Vista fine.

I wouldn't mind buying the old one off 9mm after she upgrades lappies...

There's prolly a few services that you can turn off and some other tweaks- if interested...

Really? Make me an offer The only issues I know of are the keyboard doesn't work, and it overheats if you don't have a cooling pad underneath it. It's not a bad laptop, really.. I'm just ready for a new one - I've had this one about four years I think. The motherboard was replaced after a year cos it suddenly died on me. Hmm, I think that's it...

PS - definately interested in which services I can turn off, and tweaks to make it faster, ect.

ok, I'd appreciate it if you'd post or PM me the manufacturer and model # of your lappy, I wanna price a replacement kb and check out the specs before we discuss price. I also wanna see if I can find something on that overheating problem too. Thanks 9mm.

I'd suggest fixing it for ya but by the time you paid shipping here and back, the parts, and I'd prolly want $50... it's prolly best if you just buy the new lappy and sell the old. ?

I'll get back to ya on services to disable.

nope, haven't done any tweaks... and I didn't get SP2 cos I kept hearing it was screwing ppl's stuff up :/

My lappy is a Sony Vaio PCG-GRZ660

thanks for offering to fix it, but after seeing those new lappys at CompUSA, well.. I want a new one

eta - apparently the overheating is a well known problem of this model:
