    $100 laptops...ugly but they're here

Las Vegas (NV) - The One Laptop Per Child project is inching towards final production: Prototypes are currently on display at the Consumer Electronics Show and we have used the opportunity to play around with the devices shown by Marvell, which provides the wireless chips for the device. Get a close-up look at the $100 laptop in our slideshow

These would be perfect for elementary, middle and high school students in a classroom environment where budgets are a concern.

Did you see the part where they mention that when/if they become available to the public, it might be on the basis of buying 2, 1 for yourself and one for someone in an under-developed country?

Thats annoying that they do that but ****, how about to our schools first or kids around here. ****, kids in undeveloped countries seem to need water food and clothes more than email IMs and web cams.

Yea, there's some truth in what you say. I read about how the peace Corps went to some African country in the 60's and struggled to train a relocated tribe how to do modern farming, using modern hand tools & motorized equipment, then were baffled as to why no farming took place after they left. You see, the tribe were hunters, not farmers, had never farmed, did not want to farm! Duh! All too often somebody or some group decides what others need rather than really finding out what they need & want. It's real easy to observe the things that can improve a person, but the person must desire to be improved!

I do dig the cheap laptops though, there are folks who can benefit from them. Even if I have to buy 2 to get 1, I'll do it and convert it into a wlan scanner/sniffer!
No one has any right to force data on you
and command you to believe it or else.
If it is not true for you, it isn't true.

The only problem I can see with these is the interface-- unlike any other PC, so when these children, now educated get into the real world with 'real' PCs, they'll be unfamiliar again.
If your browser can't read unicode, you should probably switch!

Absolutely. Feed them first, then worry about getting them onto a network...
