CAT6 Straight PC to PC speed issues

    Hello,

Have just set up a machine to machine network using CAT6 Straight through.

    Machine 1:PCI : Netgear GA 311 NAR....
Machine 2:On board Marvell Yukon 88E8001/8003/8010

    Both are gigabit cards.

    Now to test I moved a 2.1Gb folder from M2 to M1

Test 1 with different 10/100 cards going through router modem

Test 2 with cards specified above

    Results
    test 1 :101 secs
    test 2 : 230 Secs

So going from 10/100 to the gigabit only increased my speed 2.3 fold.

How can I improve this result? Is it best to use a switch?

Currently I only have Ip address and subnet mask set on both machine as I am not to sure what I should put or how I should calculate the default gateway or the Pri + Sec DNS Server.

Also wondering what I can use to test the speed in bits that I'm getting.

I hope somebody can shed some light on this.

    Thanks in advance

How are you connecting Machine -> Machine with straight through cable?

Well it should be a crossover cable for a PC to PC connection. But it seems that your NICs (or at least one of them) autosensed and corrected.

I don't think you can get as good results using a direct PC to PC connection. If you really want the best results it would probably be best to buy a gigabit switch.
