What speedtest results are you currently getting when tested at websites in your country?
Hi guys.
I just recently upgraded to the new Kingston Communications Karoo BB service, 8mbps and am looking into maximizing my speed.
The only real changes I have made so far is upgrading my Netgear DG834G router to the latest firmware as i'm worried about messing things up.
Here are my current details.
TCP options string = 0204058a01010402
MTU = 1458
MTU is not fully optimized for broadband. Consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for better throughput. If you are using a router, it could be limiting your MTU regardless of Registry settings.
MSS = 1418
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1418, which equals MSS.
Default TCP Receive Window (RWIN) = 65535
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled TCP Receive Window = 65535
Note: TCP 1323 Options need to be enabled for RWIN over 2^16 (65535). Windows 9x might also need the MS Vtcp386 fix.
For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other RWIN values that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
521824 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 8)
260912 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 4)
130456 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 2)
65228 (MSS x 46)
bandwidth * delay product (Note this is not a speed test):
Your TCP Window limits you to: 2621.4 kbps (327.675 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your TCP Window limits you to: 1048.56 kbps (131.07 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 117 hops
TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 00000000 (0)
Any help would be great!
Thanks in advance.

Hi,
I ran a test:
Speed
878.1 kilobits per second
Communications 878.1 kilobits per second
Storage 107.2 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 9.6 seconds
Subjective rating Good
Info
Date & time Tuesday, November 21, 8:52AM*
Connection type ADSL
Region United Kingdom
Data size 1024KB
I'm getting around 100 KB/sec when i download on average.

Use these custom settings with TCP Optmizer:
General Settings tab:
Custom settings - check
Modify All Network Adapters - check
network adapter selection - your NIC
MTU - 1458
TTL - 64
TCP Receive Window - 260912
MTU Discovery - Yes
Black Hole Detect - No
Selective Acks - Yes
Max Duplicate ACKs - 2
TCP 1323 Options:
Windows Scaling - checked
Timestamps - uncheck
Advanced Settings tab:
Max Connections per Server - 10
Max Connections per 1.0 Server - 20
LocalPriority - 5
Host Priority - 6
DNSPriority - 7
NetbtPriority - 8
Lan Browsing speedup - optimized
QoS: NonBestEffortLimit - 0
ToS: DisableUserTOSSetting - 0
ToS: DefaultTOSValue - 136
MaxNegativeCacheTtl - 0
NetFailureCacheTime - 0
NegativeSOACache Time - 0
LAN Request Buffer Size - 32768
Then select "Apply Changes" and reboot to take effect
How much of the 8 mbps you are able to achieve depends much on your distance to the central office of the ISP. See this pic for explanation:

Thanks for your help!
Just out of interest, is the MTU setting correct as I have noticed most people saying it should be set to 1500?
Mine is PPoA (PPP over ATM) LLC Based.

What speed are you getting now?
You can try to increase your MTU using the following with TCP Optimizer:
General Settings tab:
Custom settings - check
Modify All Network Adapters - check
network adapter selection - your NIC
MTU - 1500
TTL - 64
TCP Receive Window - leave blank
MTU Discovery - Yes
Black Hole Detect - No
Selective Acks - Yes
Max Duplicate ACKs - 2
TCP 1323 Options:
Windows Scaling - uncheck
Timestamps - uncheck
Advanced Settings tab:
Max Connections per Server - 10
Max Connections per 1.0 Server - 20
LocalPriority - 5
Host Priority - 6
DNSPriority - 7
NetbtPriority - 8
Lan Browsing speedup - optimized
QoS: NonBestEffortLimit - 0
ToS: DisableUserTOSSetting - 0
ToS: DefaultTOSValue - 136
MaxNegativeCacheTtl - 0
NetFailureCacheTime - 0
NegativeSOACache Time - 0
LAN Request Buffer Size - 32768
Then select "Apply Changes" and reboot to take effect
Hi,
I was getting about the same speed. I will try your new tweak, thanks!
What would you expect roughly for an 8 Mbps connection?
I am currently getting about 110 KB/s on downloads.
If you are located within 1.5km from your ISP you should be getting about 80% of your subscribed speed at this time (it is now 6pm in the UK) and 90% between 4-6am.
So 80% of 8 mbps = 6.4mbps or 800 KB/s.
After you can adjust your MTU to 1500, you will need to adjust your RWIN to 256960.
Make sure your modem is placed a few feet away from the router or other electrical devices such as speakers, sub-woofer, cordless phone, etc.
Tips to optimise wireless connections are available in the Wireless Networking section of our forum.
Awesome, I seem to be making progress.
Communications 1.6 megabits per second
Storage 197.2 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 5.2 seconds
Subjective rating Great

Trouble is, I did have a cordless phone near my router...so Im not sure if just removing that made the difference or the setting changes.
Thanks for your help again.
Here is a tip from the Wireless Networking section:
http://www.speedguide.net/faq_in_q.p...ory=91&qid=158
In addition, cordless phone will also impact on your modem. It is a good idea to use a line phone instead and connect the cordless phone in some other room. What factors impact WiFi performance ?
Wireless networks' performance is affected by a variety of factors, such as the distance between nodes, walls/obstacles that obstruct direct line-of-sight, and other wireless traffic in the general area (such as the presence of 802.11b devices in the 802.11g network, or the presence proprietary non-standard WiFi technologies).
Cordless phones, bluetooth devices, microwaves, and anything that may cause interference in the 2.4GHz frequency range can affect the WLAN performance as well.
Thing is, my network, router isnt wireless.
Anyway, its works now, so thats great.
