    Friend Needs Help

Well, my friend is having a really tough time with his internet. When he connects to a gaming server or VOIP server, he connects fine...the first time. When he disconnects, his internet claims that it is down, as he can't connect to any other internet programs, such as AIM, or his internet browser (Mozilla Firefox 2.0). He is forced to restart his computer, or be disconnected from the internet until doing so.

He has called GeekSquad to come over and check it out, but they left puzzled stating that his modem and router share the same IP address and they are conflicting somehow. They looked all through his router settings and didn't see anything outlying from standard setup.

If you have any comments that could possibly help, please share!

    Thanks in advance.

Don't know what to say to help, but I hope your friend got his money back after the ass raping of the Geek Squad.

More and more ISPs are shipping modems that are already routers...they're more like all in one gateway appliances. Adding another router to one could lead to conflicts.

What type of broadband does he have?
What make broadband modem does he have?
What make router does he have?

By type of Broadband do you mean DSL/T1?

He has a Linksys router, but he's not sure what type of modem.

He's tried 3 different routers and several different modems, but still nothing.

Yes...cable...or DSL. It's entirely a guessing game until we know the details. "Conflicting IP address"...reported by geek squad..hard to believe the same exact IP on both devices...but I do believe a conflicting IP range if his modem is also a router and he added another router. But the geek squad guy should have figured that easy one out.

But..until given those 3 important details for starters.....it's only a guessing game here.

    Broadband Type: Cable
Modem Type: CAT5 (or did you mean something else? because all he knows is that it plugs into his computer lol.)
    Router Type: Linksys
