Saltless Water Softeners - Do they work?

I have seen this on the web, and am interested in this type of water softener since it uses no electricity, no salt and no backwashin, small unit looks to be easily installed. I would be very interested in hearing more about this, if anyone uses anything similar. The one I found to be the most interesting is a Pelican brand unit using filtersorb SP media (www.waterfilter-usa.com) thanks

As far as I can tell it's a hoax. When I phoned to ask some questions about the technological basis I got a lot of conspiracy about salt-based water softeners and a lot of dodging of my direct question as to what technology THEY are using.

He also proceeded to tell me how fluoride doesn't prevent tooth decay among other hilarious parts of the conversation.

All I could think was that passing a psychological exam was obviously not part of the hiring requirements because this guy was a certifiable loon!

Never talked to that company but I read about those filters somewhere along the way.

I think those filters do a pretty good job but they totally kill your water pressure is what I heard. I think replacing the filter cartridges is costly. I also think that the water isn't quite as soft as a salt based softener.

Here is one I am looking to buy. was wondering if anyone now about it. supposedly does not leave you slippery. although the slippery is good, just have to get use to it. 350 bucks.... I love the idea of no salt bags! I just hate being scammed and 350 is 350.

I dunno Kip, I believe that I can compress water as good as they can soften it with their method...

That's nuts man! Am I hearing you right? x2 40 pound bags a week? How many grains is your unit? That seems like an awful lot of salt. I used to have a puny Culligan unit (26,000 grains) that used quite a bit of salt, but I have since installed a 96,000 grain Water Boss with a digital "on-demand" head and I use less than 1/4 of the salt that I used to. It regenerates every 700 gallons because I have really hard water. 200+ foot well ice cold water! I use pure solar salt at $4 a bag. 2 50 lb bags of salt will last a couple months.

Mo you have to understand Cat. He keeps his body well brined so that he doesn't taste good to his enemies. It's a form of self preservation if you will.

Hahaha yeah I started this thread last year when I was looking at a water softener.

Have to admit, they had to come back 3 times to make it so that mine didn't leak. Was a frustrating experience and I bought a premium product IMHO.

I love mine. It is probably 2X what I needed, but there is no such thing as too much comfort. Soft water for showering and laundry is the only way to go.
