What DIDS advised was good sincere advice and worth trying.

Do as he advised and you'll see as you go along. Look for a date prior to your problems and restore that. It should solve your problems

No need for you to be sorry Paul. You had no way of knowing who was telling you true, and who was pulling your chain. As I stated, that was not one bit funny to or for a beginner. I hope you have gotten your computer straightened out. It can be a very frustrating experience for sure...even for the best of the best of our gurus...don't give up!

Let's see... started at 10:54am and it's now 8:11am the following day and he won't get to start until tonight.

If he would have just reformatted as posted 8 minutes later, he would have been done by lunch yesterday.

I'm not the bad guy here. I'm the realist.

I agree with that statement for you or me MM, and for anyone with at least some technical knowledge to assist them. He as a newbie does not yet have that going for him. I for one would not have attempted a format when I was brand new. Just a thought.

I guess that's how I (and many others) learned... start the format, hit a roadblock, figure it out, move along, hit another, learn something else and eventually get it done.

    Whatever works for ya...

Ahhhh...the ole school of hard knocks I see...I think I graduated at the top of that class! My second concern was his statement about limitied funding...so if he gets in too deep, and can't figure it out, he would not have the funds to take it to a shop for repair I am assuming as well. Sad he does not have someone close to him that could physically help out, that would have been my next suggestion. At any rate...I hope he gets it going.

    Try DIDS suggestion.

If it fails to help, download a copy of Hijackthis
Unzip the download, and click the hijackthis.exe file to run it.

Do a system scan, and post the results here for analysis.

    P.S.
If anyone ever tells you you need to format your drive, tell them it is THEY who need to learn more about being a computer guru, not you.

Okay, I just tried DIDS suggestion and when I came to the step where i was supposed to click on a day on the calender in which to restore my computer, there was a box that read: "There are currently no restore points available." and the only date bolded on the calender was today's date.

Like I say, I know nothing about computers and I'm still not sure who to trust here. Sorry for being so paranoid, but my wife is an interpreter for the deaf and she needs the computer to book free-lance jobs and download information. So if I was to screw up this computer somehow, it would be a mess for her.

Debbie has confirmed that Norm's suggestion is solid, so if I could get maybe one or two confirmations, then I'll give it a go.
Thanks to those of you who have been supportive and helpful...

Deleted several posts that have not much to do with the subject at hand.

PaulEdwardWagemann, welcome to SG. Some advice. You probably would have been better off by making your request for help in either the software or hardware forum. This one is full of people just looking for a laugh or two and not really made for serious hardware or software discussion.

It seems you have no restore point so if that's really the case, what DID's suggested, won't work.

Also, Norm is of the opinion as am I that most problems can be fixed without a reformat of your drive.

You might try what YardofStuf already suggested.

I'll explain in a bit more detail since your new. Go to Start/Run and type in msconfig

    By Yard full of stuffin'

As far as what to look for in msconfig Paul,

    xashfsg.exe
    aoighopaerh.exe
    eorugher.exe
    lknlkucv.exe

Junk like that, very random letters and usually at least 8 letters long.

    Paul,

Norm definitely! YardoStuf, as well as Downhill. You are in good hands!

I am still wondering if the F8 button, return to last good configuration might not be of some assistance? Whatcha think fellas?

Looks like the function "restore" was never running.

People will forget what you said... and people will forget what you did... but people will never forget how you made them feel.

Moving this to software forum so it may get more attention.

Paul, I'm guessing it's more a browser related error..the PWL files have been known to cause issues if there were too many or they got corrupted. But I've not seen them be browser related, the <username>.PWL file was how Windows 9X identified the logged in user, for both windows local logon, and networks.

Do you have all your windows updates?

Do you have an updated, current antivirus program?

Do you run anti-ad/spyware programs, such as Spybot Search and Destroy?

Try a good temp file remover, called "CCleaner". It's good at removing temporary internet files.

Your browser may be lacking some plugins that this site needs to run..such as Macromedia Flash or Shockwave. You can download and install those at www.adobe.com (make sure to opt out of the Yahoo tool bar install..you'll see a checkbox)

What's the sites address? I tried Googling it..no luck. Perhaps it has a trojan or something infected the site..and it's causing your browser to crash.
