    DSL download speed is 56k slow

    I recently orderded AT&T yahoo DSL. The advertised speed is 384 Kbps to 1.5 Mbps download and is 128 to 384 Kbps upload. Upload-wise I am running fine (237 Kbps, 29.6 KB/sec). Download-wise I am getting around 64 Kbps, 8KB/sec on the speed test, dangerously close to 56k. I ran the TCP Optimizer to no avail. My only thought is that it might be going so slow because it is new (DSL service started 5 days ago) and that it might take time before it reaches full speed.

    I am running Windows XP. Here are the results of the TCP/IP Analyzer. Any help would be appreciated.


    TCP options string = 020405ac0103030101010402

    MTU = 1492
    MTU is optimized for PPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising MTU to 1500 for optimal throughput.

    MSS = 1452
    MSS is optimized for PPPoE DSL broadband. If not, consider raising your MTU value.

    Default TCP Receive Window (RWIN) = 128480
    RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 1 bits (scale factor of 2)
    Unscaled TCP Receive Window = 64240

    For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
    Other RWIN values that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
    511104 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
    255552 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
    127776 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
    63888 (MSS x 44)

    bandwidth * delay product (Note this is not a speed test):

    Your TCP Window limits you to: 5139.2 kbps (642.4 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
    Your TCP Window limits you to: 2055.68 kbps (256.96 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

    MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

    Time to live left = 57 hops
    TTL value is ok.

    Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
    Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

    IP type of service field (RFC1349) = 01000000 (64)
    Precedence (priority) = 010 (immediate)
    Delay = 0 (normal delay)
    Throughput = 0 (normal throughput)
    Reliability = 0 (normal reliability)
    Cost = 0 (normal cost)
    Check bit = 0 (correct, 8th checking bit must be zero)

    DiffServ (RFC 2474) = CS2 010000 (16) - class 2 (RFC 2474). Similar forwarding behavior to the ToS Precedence field.

    Ya generally I think for the first week or month they monitor or do something with it. I'd say keep your settings constant for a while see how it goes, and then play around with the TCP Optimizer slider bar a little.
