    General IP / DNS question

I recently been bugged by a guy in irc. His hostname shows in irc but obviously thats not his ip address.
Is it possible to resolve hostanames to the network ip?

    I tried a netstat -n command :-

Proto Local Address Foreign Address State
    TCP 127.0.0.1:1025 127.0.0.1:4921 TIME_WAIT
    TCP 127.0.0.1:1025 127.0.0.1:4923 TIME_WAIT
    TCP 127.0.0.1:1025 127.0.0.1:4925 TIME_WAIT
    TCP 127.0.0.1:1025 127.0.0.1:4929 ESTABLISHED
    TCP 127.0.0.1:1025 127.0.0.1:4933 ESTABLISHED
    TCP 127.0.0.1:1025 127.0.0.1:4941 ESTABLISHED
    TCP 127.0.0.1:1025 127.0.0.1:4943 TIME_WAIT
    TCP 127.0.0.1:1025 127.0.0.1:4945 TIME_WAIT
    TCP 127.0.0.1:1025 127.0.0.1:4947 TIME_WAIT
    TCP 127.0.0.1:1025 127.0.0.1:4949 TIME_WAIT
    TCP 127.0.0.1:1025 127.0.0.1:4951 TIME_WAIT
    TCP 127.0.0.1:1025 127.0.0.1:4953 TIME_WAIT
    TCP 127.0.0.1:4929 127.0.0.1:1025 ESTABLISHED
    TCP 127.0.0.1:4933 127.0.0.1:1025 ESTABLISHED
    TCP 127.0.0.1:4941 127.0.0.1:1025 ESTABLISHED
    TCP 192.168.1.2:1057 68.142.233.168:5061 TIME_WAIT
    TCP 192.168.1.2:1107 69.177.69.70:6667 ESTABLISHED
    TCP 192.168.1.2:4842 216.239.59.104:80 TIME_WAIT
    TCP 192.168.1.2:4912 66.102.11.104:80 TIME_WAIT
    TCP 192.168.1.2:4916 66.102.11.104:80 TIME_WAIT
    TCP 192.168.1.2:4930 216.239.59.104:80 ESTABLISHED
    TCP 192.168.1.2:4934 66.102.11.104:80 ESTABLISHED
    TCP 192.168.1.2:4942 66.102.11.104:80 ESTABLISHED

Ignoring all the local stuff and the Yahoo Browser Port
    The irc server is 69.177.69.70:6667
I tried a dcc to the guy bugging me which worked and i notice the ip 68.142.233.168:5061 That seems a reasonable port that an irc client might choose for dcc, however this ip is nothing close to the guys hostname ip.......69.29.245.244.

Plus netstat returned different results each time I ran it. Typical M$ crap i guess.

I have tho recieved a nasty email from him.........so i presume i can get his true ip from the full email header?

My hostname is the same as my dynamic dsl ip address.

    Any networking advice is appreciated.

Hmmm, looking at the email the mail came from
    209.206.160.251 centurytel.net

    The header shows [192.168.1.2] (69-29-245-244.dyn.centurytel.net [69.29.245.244])

So am i correct that the mail is from the lan 1.2 address and the ip is the same as his irc hostname? Uhuh?
Other irc users have different ip address from hostnames. Wonder why?

Ah that 68.142.233.168:5061 is a yahoo ip. I do use yahoo.

post the FULL email header (x out your ip & address if desired)
No one has any right to force data on you
and command you to believe it or else.
If it is not true for you, it isn't true.
