    New member needs some help.

    Hi All

I was wondering if someone could help me with a couple small problems. I want to network my laptop that runs windows xp to my old pc which runs windows. I also want to run the laptop and pc from the laptop screen. I also use cable internet at university. What hardware/software do i need to make all of this work?

    Thanks in advance

Yup I'm in a dorm environment and an ethernet cable provides access to the uni servers and the internet.

Personally, I'd hide my own computers behind a router that does NAT. School networks can be infested, worms 'n trojans and other things spreading around.

Most broadband routers have a built in 4 port switch...allowing you to network your PCs that are behind it.

Do you have a need to access your PCs from outside your dorm room?

I'm having the pc sent up to me. not sure how long it will take to get here though lol. So if I use a router would that enable me to run the laptop and pc from the laptop screen?

    Thanks in advance

In order to use the laptop's screen for the PC, you will need to have a video input on your laptop. Most laptops only have a video out which means you would need to purchase some form of video capture device (USB or PCMCIA) that you could connect to your laptop and then to the PC's video output.

Do you not have a monitor for the PC?
