    HELP no sound

I just reformatted a friends hard drive now I have no sound. in device manager it has the yellow mark on it. It is a C-Media AC97. I tried to remove it and put it back in. I tried deleting it and reinstalling it. Does XP have a generic drive or where can I download one from?

Ok first off does it have a seperate sound card in the computer? Next if not then it may be disabled in the bios.. you might have to go in and enable it. OTherwise if you do have a seperate sound card you need to install the drivers for it.

Some things that are generally good to do before formatting and installing an OS.

Document the hardware! Take a peek at Device Manager, see what devices there are..make/model, etc. Then go download the latest drivers for them, including the drivers for your motherboard chipset.

C-Media...it's probably onboard sound, so checkout the downloads section for the mothboard at its website.

Windows Update is also another source...after you validate Windows...check that 3rd section, where the drivers are.

If Device Mangler is showing it...I'm sure it's enabled in BIOS, else it wouldn't see it at all.

    Next top...motherboard manufacturers website.

Yes I checked and it was enabled. I am lost on what to do. I tore the computer apart lookingto see what kind of mobo it was and all it said was
K7S51. During boot up it says it is an American Megatrend. I have looked for drivers for it and cant find any and the ones I have found dont work. Microsoft Update says that the one installed is the best one for it.

Try looking at this website... it looks like you use the same drivers as the K7S5A

remove it from device manager, restart, prepare drivers (well prepare drivers first) and if you dont have any let windows search for them. But like they said try download them from manufacturer website.

Under sound, grab that driver, never use windows update for drivers, they usually suck, and have limited features.
