D-Link DI-524 router won't let me connect to work computer via VPN

I am new to VPN. My employer gave me the info to set up my computer so that I could connect to my work computer from home via VPN. I have a desktop computer and a laptop. I use the laptop wirelessly with a D-Link DI-524 router at home. I would like to access my work computer from my laptop. Unfortunately, as long as my DI-524 router is connected I cannot connect to my work computer via VPN from my desktop or laptop computer - I get an "800" error. If I disconnect the router and hook up my ADSL modem directly to my computer, I can connect to my computer at work with no problem. But this is a nuisance and it means I would have to connect my laptop to my modem - and I want to use my laptop wirelessly. D-Link tech support has referred me to the Microsoft website which, among other things, tells you how to set your computer up for VPN. I had already done that. That isn't the problem - the problem is the router (since it works fine when the router isn't connected) and how to get it to work.

Any suggestions? Do I need a different type of router? If so, can anyone suggest a brand and model number? Thanks everyone.

I can't believe it. I solved my own problem. Although I don't entirely understand it, I read that I might need to open a port or ports. So I configured the router to open some ports and amazingly enough, I could then connect to my computer at work. I probably opened more ports than I had to so I'll have to go back over what I did and find out which one that I opened was the right one.

Enable PPTP and IPSec passthrough, on most routers, it's a feature you enable in the web admin. With most VPN software, especially native Microsoft PPTP VPN support, opening/forwarding ports does not need to be done.

You might want to scan your ports to make sure they are secure.

I did play around iwth a few port settings when I set my VPN network as well. The worst scenario is to leave a port unsecure and allow hacker to gain access to your network.

I am having the same problems referred above. How do I open all the ports? I have gone thru the whole 9 yards - firmware upgrades, enabled PPTP, IPSec, spoken to Cable modem provider (it works when i connect directly to the modem).

Any help/suggestions would be useful.

Kaushik - I am not knowledgeable enough to help you. Mine ended up working fine and I can't remember what I did. I seem to recall I had a problem when I got a firmware upgrade and I may have just reinstalled it from the CD that came from it. It works fine now - both from the desktop and wirelessly with my laptop. I did email D-link and they may have helped me. It seems to me that I was making it way more complicated than it was. I've had no problems for months now. I recall though how terribly frustrated I was when it wouldn't work. I was going to buy another router. But it is now fine. Here is D-link's US contact info:

Although it has been a long time since the original posting, I hope this helps:

The new DLINK Firmware 2.07 from March 2008 solves the problem with PPTP in DLINK DI-524.

Now VPN connections will pass the router when VPN-passthrough is activated in Tools / Misc in the router's admin interface.

I was able to get my VPN passthrough actually working by upgrading my firmware on my D-Link DI 524 B series router. I couldn't find v 2.07 but I found an earlier version on d-link's site:

I'm totally new to vpn setup and I'm trying to setup my office which is on a network via wireless connection and I'm trying to find out if I need software for the vpn setup or if their is something built in to xp to allow this setup..... any help thanks in advance

More detail is needed. You have a DLink 524? What is the office setup?
