Wireless router and Wireless AP help

Overview - I want to set up a wireless router and an additional wireless AP to work together to give me good coverage throughout my house. Looking for an in depth walk thru for a n00b.

    some details:
I have 2 wireless units that can both be AP's or Routers. I want to use 1 of them on my 2nd floor to act as a booster off the main router in the basement. The units are not of the same make or model either, 1 is a belkin and 1 is a US robotics. I have the belkin acting as the router for now and have my main computer hard wired to it. My laptop connects very well to this router in the basement and on sections of the 2nd floor. I want to get coverage on the rest of the 2nd floor and the 3rd floor if possible. I know getting a Pre-n will probably fix my problems but i was hoping to use what i have for now. How do i need to set these up? I'm not the best at networking and cant seem to find a good walk thru using Google as of yet.
    any help would be appreciated.

The Belkin you have, depending on the model, supports WDS (wireless distribution..via bridging)....although not sure of how well it will function with a different brand like the 3COM. Not sure if the 3COM supports it.

yes, it does have a bridging section in the setup area. I'm guessing that it will not be able to act as both a router for my wired pc and as a bridge at the same time?? What i was thinking about doing is making a wired router out of an old pc i have laying around and then just use the to AP's bridged together.
