click on folder and message asking me if I want to format disk

Greetings all. The trouble began when I tried to install windows service pack 2.
The download went fine. It freezes during the install. The bar gets amist 3/5ths the way across the window and then freezes screen...and cursor. Can't restart or shutdown...nothing works...so I end up pishing and holding the power button. I reboot.
Windows tells me that my system is unstable and to remove the downloaded service pack. I do that. The fun begins. First try does not work.
    I try to uninstall...no go. I reboot.
This time it works. I try to install SP2 again. Download takes...install does not.
I repeat the proceedure again. nothing. And again. Exactly as above.
all this in the process of a clean install of windows XP.
I pull the drive. Slap in another one. Both drives are WD 100 gigs.
reoeat process. SP2 will not take. I try twice more. So I abandon the installation .
I have now done two clean installs on two separate drives. Added the updates. And tried the SP2.
So I try to play videos...after installing the same codecs and the same software. Now Mozilla will not go to yahoo as start page...if u do not open a browser within five minutes adter booting ...I have to reboot for it will not open a web page otherwise.
In order to keep a page open I have to open the windows update page...and keep reloading internet eplorer to that page...so I can use mozilla to browse.
If I am on Grouper with my family...then the web browser goes down.
and finally when I try to click on my favourite audiobook...I am now asked if I want to reformat the 200 gig...the folder won't open...when I copy the folder to the 160 gig drive...the folder opens but there is nothing inside.
When I try to delete the folder on the 200 gig...the message comes back that the I cannot delete folder...it is not empty.
When I right click folder...nothing happens for ten seconds or so...then
the cursor appears...and five seconds after that...the window opens with all the options.
If anybody can help...your assistance would surely be appreciated.
    Zholla

Wow, you're deffinately giving alot of detail there lol

When you installed Windows XP both times, did you have your computer hooked up directly to the internet? Unless you have a router w/NAT or hardware firewall connected between you and your modem(assuming you have broadband)? The problem with installing windows with a direct connection to the net is that you dont have time to setup a software firewall or virus scanner before the crap gets onto your PC.

    greetings Yard

    thanks for your prompt reply.
U always disconnect the cable to the cable modem and I always install Zone alarm before I hook up to the net.
There is probably some virus or sptware wreaking havoc...on that I agree with you. I have swept all my drives to the best of my ability using spybot and adaware and avast for keeping virus' off the machine.
Some of this trouble i was having before where the surfung was concerned...whuch is why I reformatted and repartitioned the drive and did a clean install. Help brother...help!!!
Again thanks for the speedy reply.

    Hi,
First of all, I'd edit your post to remove the Windows CD key from it

Second, you could try creating an XP disc w/SP2 slipstreamed into it .. there is a thread a few spots down on it .. might work

I've heard of many forms of spyware that blocks the installation of Windows Firewall/Security Center

I have now done two clean installs on two separate drives. Added the updates. And tried the SP2.
What updates exactly? You should install xp and then immediate next thing to install is sp2. Install-setup is safest in this order:

    1. xp os
    2. sp2
    3. windows update (the xpsp2 firewall will guard you while doing win updates)
    4. 3rd party apps
    5. install 3rd party firewall and antivirus last.

If no joy then your copy of xpsp2 is corrupted.
No one has any right to force data on you
and command you to believe it or else.
If it is not true for you, it isn't true.

    Hi Tony T

After the clean install...I always go to windows update and click on the custom button.
I install direct x first...restart...then when i return...there are a couple dozen security updates waiting for the next download. I do these next. And restart.
Then SP2 shows itself for dl...
I am going to burn off the few files I need...onto DVD...then try this today. Thanks. Before I slipstream...I must get this to work first. Peace.

Download the stand-alone service pack from Microsoft's site.

    http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

its a BIG file, but its everything. (yes its 200+Mb for the stand-alone) It is designed for multiple computer installs but its also what you would use if you were making a slipstreamed Disc. I always got the Larger SP File to get the job done right.

Now, if your still havin issues and you dont care about wipe and reload.

Disconnect from net, Wipe the HD CLEAN, Install your XP-Pro/SP1, drop this disc in and install SP2 from the disc. Here you have a clean install. the SP2 installer DOES PAUSE often on certian systems. I had a system lockup on me but I gave it 10 mins and the Service pack responded back and had finished the install. Forget about Direct X till AFTER all the other updates are finished.

Also.. just incase of hardware issues..
Remove all extra drives and un-needed hardware except 1 CD/DVD drive and 1 Hard drive. Worry about the extra drives and stuff later..

Hey, this same thing happens to me

As soon as I double click on a folder containing my MP3s it asks me if I want to reformat the drive.

Are these files gone or is there someway I can get them back?

    pc asks to format drive

Dude...I never got an answer to that question...
I have all my anime, movies and music backed up...so I wipe clean the drive and reinstall...
It happened to me recently...few months back...
I just reinsstalled the OS and started over.

thanks man, ill give it a shot

its the strangest thing...this has never ever happend to me before. i have a legit version of XP, all updates, mcafee.

we had a virus on one of our network servers, but not once did i get the notifications about it like other people in the office did.

i dont mind to reformat at all...it just sucks that im losing all those mp3s!

As soon as I double click on a folder containing my MP3s it asks me if I want to reformat the drive.

Are these files gone or is there someway I can get them back?

If you right click on my computer and select manage, then go to disk management, does it show all hard drives as healthy with a NTFS or FAT file system?
