ping spikes--what causes them?

Whenever I play an online game I will see my ping spike over 1000 and then back down to 80 or so. What can I do to avoid and what causes them? Verizon dsl 640/90

bad router? maybe it's yer computer... but mostly it's something u cant control..

it's more likely to be yer isp rather than yer computer.. but even if it's yer computer..

it's prolly ram or processor speed.. post more info about yer computer..

Ping spikes are usually the fault of your provider -- overcrowed backbone, bad routing, etc. Does this happen on every server you play on? How are your pings to your gateway?

computer is p3 850-256mb of ram--dlink 10/100 nic card.. How do I ping my gateway?

Wow got the same problem got a PIII 500 and it happens on every server and happens when
I run spped test too first ones great second
Blows but this is a new problem for me happened after I installed the web page patch
(I think) any way I'm gonna try to restore
my registry as I've made a bunch of changes
lately I'll post what I find if I could help

You need to set up a static address for
your DSL modem. Go to network settings and
find the TCP/IP with the name of your modem.
Assign a non routable address to it and make
sure the WINS is not running. Reboot and away
you'll go.

I used 192.168.2.1 but any non routable address will do. What's happening is that periodically your computer is trying to get an address for itself and waiting until it fails to get any response.
