    Question on Installing Cooling Fan

I'm replacing the case/cpu fan in my Dell computer. It's the type with a shroud over the cpu with the fan blowing into it and over the cpu and heatsink. The connector to the old fan has two wires only. The replacement fans all have three. Where the fan connector plugs into the motherboard there are three prongs. My question is; should I cut off the third wire on the new fan? Will it potentially harm the motherboard to leave it on?

Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

third wire is most likely a speed sensor wire, do not cut it off. It should work just fine.

yep thats prob what it is... most new mobo's have places to hook this so you can monitor the speed in the bios.

Hooked up with all three wires and so far all OK! Should I be able to see something in setup or ? that gives me the info from the third wire?

    Thanks guys

As long as that third wire is connected to the correct pin on the motherboard, you'd see info (fan RPM) in the BIOS, and any motherboard monitoring software for your motherboard.
