    slow internet speed over lan

    Hi,

I share an internet connection with a friend on a small lan(only 2 computers connected). An USB ADSL modem is connected to my friend's pc and we are connected through a 10 mb/s hub. I setted my dns and default gateway as his IP address.

However i find my internet connection very slow as compared to his. Some URLs open quickly while others take much time (which is quite unusual). I can open a multimedia website in a matter of seconds while yahoo mail takes 30 minutes.

Also, sometimes when i startup windows, i can see him on our workgroup but can't access his files. He has to reboot to be able to share our files.

Do we have to use a 100 mb/s hub? Where is the problem coming from?

    Pls give me some advice.

    Thanks in advance.

Your using his Windows ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) which I see many similar complaints about.

The 10 meg hub is not a bottleneck when it comes to 2x computers sharing an internet connection (1.5...maybe 3.0 megs at best).

Any chance your DSL modem also has an ethernet port? So you can put a router in place?

    internet speed prob.

Thanks for replying so quickly. The DSL modem was provided by my Service Provider and doesn't have any other ports. It only plugs on to my friend's USB port.

By the way, we are both using win xp pro. You said there are many problems using windows ICS. Is there any other alternative solution for that?

Do you think replacing the DSL modem with a router will solve our problem? Or is there any configuration problem?

Pls give me your view about it.

I'm a fan of using routers (hardware) over software means, yes. They just seem so much more bullet proof, and perform better.

To make sure your ICS is configured properly, compare your setup to this guide:
