verizon dsl running below dialup speed

I don't know where to begin "tweaking" since my speeds seem to be so far from what DSL should be. The speedguide and Cnet speed tests sometimes clock me at below 56K dialup level. (Just clocked at 78kbps, but earlier was at 29kbps)

I run Windows XP w/ service pack 2 and I have Verizon DSL. Verizon's site says speeds can get up to 3Mbps... hmm. Anyway, I've played a bit w/ TCPOptimizer, but dont really know what I am doing. so any advice would be appreciated.

let me know if there is more information i can provide.

    thanks in advance,

    -helga

ps- just cleaned out the system w/ spybot S&D, adAware and an online virus scan... so that is hopefully not the problem.

Try thease in the sg optmizer below me to download and install

    check - custom settings
    network adapter selection -
    check modify all adapters
    maxmtu 1492
    TTL - 64
    TCP Receive Window 63888
    MTU Discovery - yes
    Black Hole Detect - no
    Selective Acks - yes
    Max Dup ACKs - 2
TCP 1323 windows scailing is checked

    Other Settings tab:

Max Connections per Server - 10
    Max Connections per 1.0 Server - 20
    Lan Browsing Speedup - optimized

Then select "Apply Changes" and reboot to take effect.

    1. Under your LAN connection - properties - general tab, uninstall all the protocols there that you do not need.

    2. Open IE and select tools - internet options - connections -

LAN settings, make sure NOTHING there is checked.

    3. ALWAYS connect your modem via ethernet (NIC) and make sure you have the latest drivers for your NIC from the manufacturer. Set your NIC duplex mode to 10mb half duplex for Cable, for DSL it is ISP dependent unless you are using a router, if so then set it to 100mb full duplex for both Cable & DSL (the instructions are in my Help & Tips link). If you are using a router make sure you have the latest firmware.

    4. Clear your temporary internet files.

    5. Power cycle your modem, unplug it for atleast 15 seconds.

    6. Download and update then do a scan with SpyBot http://beam.to/spybotsd & Ad Aware http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download to remove any spyware then install and update SpywareBlaster to stay spyware FREE. YOU MUST USE BOTH AD AWARE & SPYBOT TO ENSURE YOU ARE SPYWARE FREE SINCE ONE FINDS WHAT THE OTHER MISSES.

    7. Make sure you do the faster web page tweak in Read1st link.

    8. If you have Zone Alarm as a firewall uninstall it then visit Zonelabs.com for further instructions on removing it's left over junk.

    9. Install Outpost Firewall http://www.agnitum.com\ or Sygate Firewall http://www.sygate.com/ , both have FREE and Pro versions and are heads above ZA.

    10. Scan for viruses with your antivirus app, if you do not have one get one IMMEDIATELY, AVG 6.0 http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php is an excellent FREE AV app.

    11. Make sure you have ALL of the latest Windows Updates

    mccoffee,

thanks for the help! between your tweaks and calling verizon my speed has increased from 56kbps to 120kbps. Verizon informed me that I am supposed to have 765kbps as my purchased level of service. clearly I have a ways to go yet and verizon is sending out a techie thursday, so that will hopefully help. in the meantime I seem to have aquired some Aurora malware that adaware and spybot arent getting rid of. So, if you've got some good advice on removing that I'd be glad to hear it. Thanks again,

    -helga

i think/hope i've gotten rid of aurora... as its not showing up anymore. i had to roll back to a previous restore point... and run scans w/ trendmicro, adaware, and spybot. but it 'seems' to be gone. however, the speed has slowed back down and doesnt seem to be responding to the tweaks. i hope the techie can solve this b/c I'm running at below dialup speed!

    thanks for your help!

    Aurora popped up again today.

    C:\DOCUME~1\CHARLE~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\KEH\aurareco.exe
    and
    F2 - REG:system.ini: Shell=Explorer.exe C:\WINDOWS\Nail.exe

are in my hijack this log.

I also discovered that the satellite does plug into the phone lines, which isnt new, but it doesnt have a filter on it, so i thought i'd unplug it completely just to see if that helps the speed. However the speed is crawling along at 20kbps and I can hardly stand to even work on it.

I've disabled the XP firewall and currently have none since the Outpost firewall takes ages to DL at the rate my connection is moving. How do I get completely rid of McAfee? Control panel > add/remove programs just results in a blank page when i click on 'remove' for McAfee. i guess I have already deleted some pieces of it and must have deleted the uninstall as well.

So... I put a DSL filter on the satellite TV phone line and as if by magic I now have speeds around 660kbps. I am so relieved!

Thanks again for all your patience and help.
