    Windows 98 emulator

I am wondering if there is software that will run on Windows XP Pro and allow old software to run that was meant for 98 SE. The software is called Anvil (an older CAD program) and won't run on XP.

    Thoughts?

    Download Bochs from http://bochs.sourceforge.net/

If you can't configure it, let me know, I'll show you my config file -- What the program does is create a virtual PC that you can install Win 98 to and run programs from.

Microsoft's Virtual Machine. Pretty cool, you install it..you then do installs of Windows 95, or 98, or ME, or 2K, or whatever..inside of it. It runs within a window.

Besides the Compatibility adjustments you can fiddle with the right click of the .exe, there's an extra utility in a toolkit of the cd-rom, called QFixApp. Pain in the butt to fiddle with, I'd dabbled with it once a while ago trying to get an old outboard engine diagnostic program to run on XP (it was DOS based, and I never got it running...so had to dual boot this laptop with DOS and XP).

Virtual Machine is the security hazard.

I was hoping to stay completely away from Windows 98 because Microsoft doesn't seem to allow Windoze Updates anymore. I have 98 installed on the machine now, but I can't run any Updates on 98. So, if that's the case, even if I can run XP with 98 inside it, it'll be very slow and vunerable.

    Thoughts?

BTW... thanks a ton for all the info.

Again: Run Bochs, but don't configure its network card.

In the future, you could just boot from a bootable startup disk win98 floppy or cd and once loaded into ramdrive, pop it out and pop in the diagnostic app. (if use a cdr you can put the diagnostic app on it w/ the win98 boot disk.

Thanks, guys. I'm running XP Updates now and will try this later in the day when these are all done. I'm curious if this program will run.

    I'll let you know.

    Thanks!
