    MySQL server configuration questions

Hey guys, not sure which forum this would best go in.

I'm trying to start a MySQL server on my linux box running a leaned-out installation of Slackware 10.0, no GUIs installed, command line only.
I installed the default MySQL package with the distro installation so I am assuming that everything has been installed to the proper place, I have even removed the package and tehn reinstalled it using the Slackware package manager.

    I've run the binary mysql_install_db*
to create the default tables, and they are all there, but whenever I try to invoke the mysql daemon:
    Code:
    root@nixbox2:/bin# mysqld_safe
Starting mysqld daemon with databases from /var/lib/mysql
    050209 16:41:55 mysqld ended
    I get that error.

This is whats in the log files:

    Code:

    050206 17:23:07 mysqld started
    050206 17:23:07 InnoDB: Started
    050206 17:23:07 Fatal error: Can't open privilege tables: Table 'mysql.host' doesn't exist
    050206 17:23:07 Aborting
    050206 17:23:07 InnoDB: Starting shutdown...
    050206 17:23:10 InnoDB: Shutdown completed
    050206 17:23:10 /usr/libexec/mysqld: Shutdown Complete
    050206 17:23:10 mysqld ended
    050207 17:47:49 mysqld started
    050207 17:47:49 InnoDB: Started
    050207 17:47:49 Fatal error: Can't open privilege tables: Can't find file: './mysql/host.frm' (errno: 13)
    050207 17:47:49 Aborting
    050207 17:47:49 InnoDB: Starting shutdown...
    050207 17:47:52 InnoDB: Shutdown completed
    050207 17:47:52 /usr/libexec/mysqld: Shutdown Complete
    050207 17:47:52 mysqld ended
I'm new at the whole UNIX/Linux thing and am trying to teach myself this stuff, and have been pretty successful getting a lot of other stuff up and running, but I'm getting frustrated by this and the MySQL on-line manual is like 1500 pages long. I've printed about 200 pages of it but am still at a loss.
any help would be greatly apprecieated.

I could probably help you if it was a windows server. Never had good luck learning nix.

Anyways don't look at the documentation. There is another area on there site that helps with configuration, but its a bitch to find. Let me look for it and I will shoot you a link.

I *think* it's 4.1, it was included in this distro of slack, I know it's not 5.x.

Difference between geeks and nerds? Geeks can do this and still get laid.
