Unable to connect via Ventrilo. Let's try TS.

I'd love to have an anonymous webproxy, they can be very useful.

Question: What is the purpose of a Proxy?

The purpose is so that people behind firewalls can access sites their firewall administrator does not want them to access. For people behind foreign gov't or military or corporate firewalls this can be an unnecessary burden.

You might not be able to access CNN, for instance, or Sports Illustrated.

The proxy would make it appear to the firewall as if these pages were coming from say, google, or some other innocuous site.

    UOD,

Interesting site. This is somewhat similar to what I'm interested in exploring, except it would be a no cost or low cost addition to Premium accounts depending on a bandwidth utilization study we'd do after it was implemented (or if the traffic just spiked).

    1) Let me be VERY clear. There is NO promise that we'll do this, I'm just trying to gauge if people are interested in the option. This is basically something I'm undertaking to see whether it's worth bugging Philip to look more seriously into it. (No point in doing so if there's no interest)

    2) I'm more interested in the web proxy/cacheing service rather than the anonymizer service. The goal is to help people access information.

    Regards.

If a base requires the use of a proxy to access the web...their proxy, how will this interface with the one you want to implement?

the simplest way would work something like this.

They would use a standard http connect (port 80) to open a session with the proxy. Afer logging in, they would be presented with a URL entry field. At that point, game on. The pages are pulled to the proxy first, and then delivered back to the end user.

Alternatively, there are some that use a client you install on your machine. This uses port 80 to make an SSL connect to the proxy. Which means that not only would it appear you were visiting an approved site, there would be no way for them to actually see what text or other info was being delivered to you even if they have a packet sniffer available to them.

ALL of this is still in the research stages though. There's no guarantee Philip will agree to it, and there's further no guarantee we can do this in a cost efficient way.

    Regards,

For me personally, it is not interesting, since I always have complete access to the web, wether at work or at home. Actually, porn sites and the like are banned at work, but I've never found a site I wanted to access blocked. Other than that, I much prefer a direct connection.

About the service in general, I think it could be a major hit in some countries if you do it via the encrypted approach. One thing to consider though, some encryption technology is illegal to export to certain US/UN sanctioned countries. Which is exactly your largest potential customer group. Aside from the legalities though, it could be a GREAT means for people with nationally limited internet access (China, for example), to get their fair full share of information on the web. An awesome tool to spread knowledge, where oppressive leaders wish to restrict.

even if there are a thousand other anonymizer proxies out there.... i still don;t see how it wouldn;t add value to the SG membership package.

i wouldn;t really have a current use for it as it stands now, but i sure wouldn;t mind having one (additional if thats the case) there if at some point i do need it.
