Distance from the access point

Hi there, I am new here and don't know much about wireless.

I am in Brazil and have an ADSL connection, but it is slow and expensive.

A few months ago one internet provider started opperating, close to my house, a wireless internet network. It is 10 times faster and costs much less.

I called there and got the information that the connection is avaliable up to 500 meters around the access point, but I am about 700 meters and I really can not access it with my wireless network card.

My question is: does exist anything like an especial antenna or something else that could help me reach the signal?

Yes, but it needs to be line of sight to their antenna.

What kind of wireless network card do you have? Is it in a laptop or desktop? Is this a service you plan to use on the go, or just from your home?

I do not know if is that what you are asking for, but let´s see:
- 802.11 b, 1,2,5.5 e 11 Mbps
- Supports 802.1x autentication
- 32 bits
- Band frequency: ISM 2.4-2.4835 Ghz
- DSSS
- 16dbm

I use this card in a desktop and laptop.

I intend to use it on the go and from home.

I spoke with a friend and he said that I can not use this system, because there are some trees btween me and the access point. And I can not see the their antenna. Is he correct?
