want to set up a network need help
Hi sorry to bother you all but i no this would of been asked loads of times now.But i'm wanting to connect my pc with the kids pc using a wireless network.I've got a adsl line so i want to have the 2 pc's networked and also get the internet on the kids pc at the same time.What i need to no has i don't have a clue about networking,what kind of stuff do i need to buy has there that many routers about on ebay.I've only got a usb modem so i guess i would need a router.Am i right in saying that a router connects the other pc to the this pc and also allows it to share my connection to the internet.Any help would be great on this subject has i don't have a very good kowledge of pc's

Steve, you have a couple of options. But in order to help you I need to ask some questions:
1) What is the operating system (OS) of your pc?
2) What is the OS of your son's pc?
3) Are you planning on sharing files between the two computers?
4) Do you want to share internet access?
5) Is your computer a laptop or desktop?
6) Is your sons computer a laptop or desktop?
If you can answer those questions we can probably help you pick a solution that will meet your needs.

It's actually quite easy Steve.
First you will need a DSL modem with an ethernet port. Your setup will connect as follows.
1. Phone line (DSL) connects to your modem.
2. Modem connects to your router via ethernet.
3. Your main pc will be hard wired to your router via ethernet.
4. Your kids pc will connect to the router via wireless.
You will need the following:
1. Wireless router (I recommend the D-Link DI624).
2. Wireless PCI card for kids pc (I recommend a Linksys WMP54G).
3. PCI ethernet card for your pc if it doesn't already have one.
Once you have installed all the hardware all you need to do is enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP, enable file and printer sharing and Client for MS Networks then share files, folders or printers etc. Your DSL line will automatically be shared via the router.
That's the basic setup, once you provide more info we can get into more specifics.

looking on ebay is this any good for me Netgear MR 814 802.11b Wi Fi Wireless Router then i guess i need to buy a card as well
That's a solid home router, however, you may want to consider that you have a DSL modem with a USB connection (from your first post).
Think about it this way. You have a connection coming in from the wall, which connects to the modem. Then from the modem via USB to your computer. This works fine for one computer, but if you want to share this connection you need to alter the way you connect to the modem.
So, first, you may have to replace the DSL modem. Now you need to find one that is compatible with the service provider. While most follow certain standards, there is the possibility yours uses some particular non-standard system. The easiest thing to do is go to your service providers website, and see what dsl modems they reccommend.
So, you've got the DSL modem sorted. You need to decide if you need to buy ethernet cards for your PC or not. If you and your son have relatively new PC's they are likely to have ethernet adapters built in. You can either look on the back for a connector that looks similar to a phone jack (but slightly larger), or, you can right click on My Computer, click properties, click the Hardware Tab, click on the Device Manager button, and look down through the (alphabetical ordered) list until you see something that says Network adapters. Open that up and you will see a list of your network adapters. If you see what looks like a little electronic card with the words "Network Connection" at the end of it, that's your network card.
For instance, mine says: Intel(R) Pro/100 VE Network Connection, and that's my intel Network Interface Card (NIC).
I need you to post whether or not you and your son's computer have NICs, and if so, what kind they are. I also need you to post what kind of DSL modem you have (Name and Model Number) so we can look at the tech specs and see if you can use it (It may have an ethernet connection available on it) or if you have to replace it.
We'll get you sorted. No worries about that, but the more info we have on your setup, the easier it will be to give you a precise set up for you and your son.

ok here we go my modem that i have is a alcatel speed touch 330 adsl modem.I do have network cards in that i tried to use but was nave 100% kept packing up for some reason.The cards i have in both pc's are realtek rtl 8139 family pci fast ethernet.I really want to set up a wireless network has at the moment i have a cable running from downstairs up to the ceiling into the bedroom above and then under the floorboards.Now we've swapped the bedrooms round so the cable won't go into the kids room thats why i'd like a wireless one set up.I've seen various posts about routers some say get netgear others say d-link so which is the best?
Can you PM who your service provider is? I'm trying to determine whether you have PPPoE or PPPoA dsl service. This will affect your modem/router choices, so we need to pick correctly.
