    Can't open Add/Remove Programs?

My dad's buddy has been recently having an issue on his computer. He just called and told me when he goes to open Add/Remove Programs, it wont even load, nothing. When he tried Add/Remove hardware, it opens fine.

What would cause this? Without me going to look at it, I'd like a simpler remedy

I formatted it about 4-5 months ago with a fresh Win2k install, btw.

    Any help is appreciated.

Have him go to Start Button\Run and type appwiz.cpl and click OK. This is the name of add-remove programs program. If it does not launce then appwiz is corrupted or missing from the windows\system32 directory an can be restored using system file checker. Other cause is that the logged on user does not have permissions to install and uninstall programs, which can be set by tweaking the registry or by using policy editor.

I had that problem with my wifeís W2K setup. For the life of me I couldnít fix it (gave up and got her XP). When she did have W2K I used JV16 power tools to add/remove software. It was the only way since the MS version didnít work.

Life is good now (the wife is happy).

If the Add/Remove Programs applet does NOT open, or flashes briefly, you may have some missing registry entries.

    To fix the problem:

    1. Open a CMD.EXE prompt.

    2. Type regsvr32 mshtml.dll and press Enter and OK.

    3. Type regsvr32 shdocvw.dll -i and press Enter and OK.

    4. Type regsvr32 shell32.dll -i and press Enter and OK.
