The best? Who realy knows but I would suggest ZoneAlarm. I've been using it for over a year with no problems

I also use ZoneAlarm...It's a great program for port blocking etc. However, it doesn't filter packets.

A hardware firewall is best. If you get a Linksys Cable/DSL router, it also operates as a hardware firewall. Gibson Research probe tests report it as a black hole, like there is no computer there. More reliable than software. Of course, with any hardware or software firewall you are still subject to interception of and possible corruption of data downstream coming to/from your computer before it arrives.

Check out the Gibson Research site, and run the probes to see how vulnerable you are now. http://grc.com/

One thing to add about GRC.com -

Although their test is a good starting point, it only scans a select few of the most commonly attacked ports. Be aware folks that just because the GRC test says your system passes their tests doesn't mean that you are invulnerable. (i know it says so right on the site, but so many people don't bother to read the fine print, or often even the rather large, obvious print... thought I'd mention it...)

I agree with HAP. A hardware firewall is great.

The BEST firewall on earth is simply unplugging your computer
