I have been using windows Me for a long time and it always worcked well. My computer served more like a server than anything else. It was hosting an FTP server with bulletproof and filesharing with DC++. Everything worcked well for monts except for the fact that i had to reboot each few days because the computer was getting slower and slower. During all these months my computer was using 100% of his upload bandwith all the time. My connection speed is uploa 40kbps and download 200kbps. IT's a DSL connection.
Last week, I decided to upgrade to windows XP in an attempt to solve this little problem. After the installation (i formatted and made a clean install), everything seemed good and my browsing speed wich was very slow in windows ME even when i was not sharing had never been that fast. I installed DC++ and started sharing just as i had done before. After a while my downloads and uploads where starting to suddenly drop and i was losing my connection. I contacted my ISP made tons of changes and nothing ever worcked. I was wondering if it was my line, my ISP, my software or windows.
So I formated my computer again and again made a clean install of Windows ME. All of my problems got solved. If checked the counter of DC++ and the one of the little software that connect to my ISP in windows Me and there were giving around 40 kbps DC++ was always saying that i had uploaded a few megs less wich is normal.
Then i reformated and reinstalled windows XP and started experimenting. I set my ISP following the instruction given by my ISP but the problem came again. I resolved one my problem in a strange way. To repair my connection that stopped each 2 hours i simply let one Internet explorer page open and strangely my connection works forever. I have not yet been able to find a trick for the other problem wich is the slow speed of my connection. But i also noticed something strange wich again only apply in windows XP. If i look at the bytes sent and received from my network card during a test run where i was uploading at full speed, i get approximately 1 200 megs in upload while DC++ sent only 755 megs of course i didnt use anything except when i loaded the Internet Explorer page. If i do some calculation 1200*1024/by 515(the number of minutes connected/60(60s/min)=39.8 kb/s wich is unsurprisigly my connection speed in upload but if i do the same in with the results of DC++, i get a speed of 25 kbps i did many test run like this one with variable duration and the results are also always in this range. Considering the fact that these 15 kbps only disappear with Xindows Xp and not with windows Me i'm inclined to think that again it's some strange behavior of XP.
As you have guessed i'm not used with sindows XP but i still had lots of time to lose with his settings. So the craps like disconnect after... Disconnect when not useful and all these crap that i could find are disabled.
I was wondering if someone is familiar enough with windows XP to know hot to make windows XP use internet efficiently for something else than browsing because it really is bothering me and after lots of search on internet i found that tons of people are having the same problem but they simply dont seem to understand that it's windows XP the problem.
I simply want a stable connection and the fastest upload speed possible i dont really care about the rest.

I run Microsoft Windows XP Pro. On a 8000/704 Kbps High Speed DSL line. I live in Norway and my ISP is Nextgentel.
My really problem is that my connection seems to Disconnect all the time and when i Upload things the speed just suddenly drops down to 10 kb/sec. The connection is so unstable that i just wanna throw my pc as far i can :P
So if u could check my TCP/IP analyce for me to mccoffe to and see if its something wrong with my settings i would be very thankfull for that

Raptor, have you got all the XP critical updates from MS.
If I remember correctly there is a worm (or 2) that will infect a XP system that hasn't been patched as soon as it connects to the web.
Install the updates, then do a thorough virus scan with updated anti virus protection.
Just a thought, hope it helps.
Also, spyware is a major cause of connection troubles. Use updated versions of spybot, and adaware to scan your system, and remove any they find.
In my experience I have found 99.9% of problems are software related. Hardware problems are rare, but do happen from time to time.
AS asked my IP analysed. As i said my problem is quite common and im happy to see that even here its aknowledged. I have all windows critical updates but i didnt scan my comp. never though of a worms immediatelyu after a format but it is possible as fot the spyware all also thy to kill them. I know that my problem is software but i still dont understand what it can be. aniway ill do everything you asked make a test run and come back on the resuts as soon as possible. I hope the answer to this problem will be found so that ill be able to spred the good news to all the other people having the problem. if anibody else have the problem he is welcomed particularly if he as information as to make finding the problem far easier.

I was actually infected by a virus and removing it as long with all my spyware really solved my problem. What i dont understand is how he could always be here even when i just formatted my computer.

Glad you found the problem Raptor.
The newer worms exploit a windows vulnerabilty, and if you aren't patched with the fix, you get infected as soon as you go online. (If you have an always on connection, and no firewall/router)
