Talking My short opinion on IDE drives...

Some may disagree, but I say this:

If you're using IDE hard drives (in non-RAID), use a PCI controller card. I've used a Promise IDE controller in every system I've had for three years now and the onboard IDE -- even with the Intel Application Accelerator installed -- cannot touch it.

For instance, using the onboard IDE, Drive Image 2002 works at around 110-120 MB a minute...on the Promise Ultra100 TX2, it's around 800-900 MB a minute. That is an AWESOME difference.

The many benches I've done for myself show that the Promise card delivers better sustained transfer rates and better burst rates than onboard IDE.

I would say spend the measly $25 or so for a Promise Ultra100 TX2 and bench it against onboard IDE and see for yourself.

    That is all.

    Yo.
