do you have the recovery console installed. If not do you have the XP install cd-rom or do you have the floppy install disks? If not you can get the install disks from here http://support.microsoft.com/default...;en-us;q310994 You need to get to the Recovery Console and copy the back up ntoskrnl.exe to system32 dir.

Yeah right... My College doesn't trust anybody... and I doubt they have extra seperate copies of XP... I wish... Hmm... Let me think... If I can borrow a CD, running repair is the only way to fix it?

you need to get to the Recovery Console. Booting off a DOS ERD wont give u access to your Hard Drive if its formatted NTFS.

NO your not screwed. You just need either the Windows XP cd or the install floppies. Then when you get to the Recovery Console you can just copy your backup over the hosed file and your golden.

Actually, no need for drastic stuff... gimme a few minutes and I'll edit in this post a complete step by step of what you need to do...

    1. Have the zip from John on a disk zipped will do fine)
    2. Grab this file: Unzip for DOS. Put this and the zip file from John onto the same disk (it'll fit).
    3. Boot your machine into the fake-DOS of XP (the console)
    4. Insert the disk into your floppy.
    5. you should have a command prompt that look something like:

    C:\>

If it displays A:, your "current drive" is still the floppy disk. In that case, you need to start by changing to your C disk with the following command and hitting enter.

    C:

Now type the following commands (press enter after each line):

    cd \WINNT\system32
    a:
    copy *.* c:
    c:
    unzip -x -j evilajax.zip

It will now ask you if you want to replace ntoskrnl.exe. Hit [y] and [enter] to confirm. Your system should be able to boot normally again now.

***NOTE: If you installed your WinXP to a different folder than C:\WINNT\, which I think is default, then you need to change the path in the cd command accordingly. Besure to put \system32 to the end of it. Further, it is assuming that you have your Windows installed on C:. If it's on another drive, be sure to replace the C:'s with the according drive letters.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers,
    Ronald

If you d/led the sp1 network install file then you can extract it from there. The problem is you need to get into recovery console to fix it. Take 6 floppies to your local library or community college and d/l them.

    Here the link for pro

THERE IS AN EASIER WAY PEOPLE!!!!!

take out the hard drive that has the bad Ntoskrnl.exe file
find a machine that has windows 200/XP and slave the hard drive that has the bad file to the other PC, then you can manipulate the files in windows with no problems

no install just copy this to the hdd or after copying the zip file put in another floppy with pcdezip on it and unzip it, theres a readme to tell u the syntax to use.

He's running NTFS, DOS is not going to able to access the HD. He needs recovery console. Now here's the worst part for him. Documents and settings files and folders are locked out of recovery console for security reasons so the backed up copy is not going to do him much good.

I would like to see him use recovery console because the school of hard knocks is allways a good way to learn. But I'm with nightowl on this one. Slave the drive and repair it from there.

One nice thing about win2k is the ERD. XP doesn't have it but something called ASR which formats the drive. Not sure how it works. Who knows maybe one day I'll install XP and run the ASR disk just to see how it works. Something about formatting a drive with data on it scares me.

    ren c:\windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe ntoskrnl.old
    cd\
    cd "documents and settings"
    cd "evil"

    move ntoskrnl.exe c:\windows\system32

that SHOULD do it... good luck
