Weezel (team 15) has the following problem

    Hi guys,

I introduced Weezel to Folding and she gets the following problems. I got no idea why, but I can see 3 probs.

Every time she restarts her box, folding decides it has a bad work unit and deletes it.

As of late, she can get no longer any WU's assigned to her (2 days now).

The FAHlog.txt gets corrupted chars inserted into it.

Any quick and easy fixes would be appreciated.

I see she is using the graphical version. I'd have her try the console version and see if that works better.

If not then need computer type, cpu, and os to go along with the information posted to send to Stanford forum to see if they can figure something out.

I am fairly new to folding and have had other types of problems, but I would say it couldn't hurt to do a clean install of F@H and see what happens. Just my two cents.

If she is using a Radeon video card she might try installing the latest drivers, otherwise I agree with rickoic about using the console version.

Also agree with eMobley about the drivers, goto the video card manufactors web site and make sure she has the latest drivers installed no matter what video card shes using. The graphical version of FAH is quite graphics intensive and it could be overwriting some portions of memory that the program is also using.

I passed the info on, but Weezel is not that computer literate. She asked me:

How do I check my computer type, cpu etc?

Weezel lives in New Zealand and I live in Australia, so it is not that easy for me to have a quick look to see what the heck is going on.

So her computer is of indeterminate age, and whatever was loaded on it at the time of purchase, ie. OS, service packs, drivers, etc. would still be running on there right now. The only thing I am certain about, her connection to the internet is via Modem.

Weezel used to be my manager a few years ago, and after talking to her at this last years New Years Eve party, she was keen to help out with the folding. Normally we e-mail each other a couple of times a year.

I e-mailed Weezel on how to come up with some basic system info, and this is what we have so far:

    Microsoft Windows 98 4.10.2222 A
    Clean install using Full OEM CD /T:C:\WININST0.400 /SrcDir=G:\WIN98 /IZ /IS /IQ /IT /II /NR /II /C /U:xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
    IE 5 5.50.4134.0600
    Uptime: 1:00:43:33
    Normal mode

    AuthenticAMD AMD-K7(tm) Processor
    128MB RAM
    11% system resources free
Windows-managed swap file on drive C (704MB free)
    Available space on drive C: 704MB of 4525MB (FAT32)
    Available space on drive D: 4383MB of 7985MB (FAT32)
    Available space on drive E: 531MB of 6983MB (FAT32)

Considering it runs 98, I assume she did not buy that box in the last year or so.

And here is the graphics card info (since the driver is dated April 99 I assume it would have to be the latest )

You might have her try the windows update feature on her computer. That should have all the critical updates for W98 and also any updated drivers that are necessary. Only thing is as she is using a modem it would probably take a few hours.

Odds are her computer hasn't been updated since she got it. So first thing I'd try is to get her off the graphical version and using the console version.

Then, do the updates, but do them a few at a time so it won't tie her up for several hours at a time. Suspect just the upgrade of IE will be a several hours download.

Hope we can get her added to the team and get her folding.
