It's not in the Registry. Your PC calculates it automatically, based on MaxMTU, you don't have to set MSS.

If you get disconnected at equal intervals of time, it might be your ISP renewing the lease of your modem or something similar.

The system you have is fast enough so it won't slow down your cable modem unless you run 20 applications at the same time :). The only hardware upgrade you can do to eventually increase your transfers a bit is the network card. It should be PCI, and good brandname, 3COM for example. However, if you ...

The serial port can be used to plug in an analog modem for upstream where needed... I've also heard that the CM can be configured through the serial port, however it can also get reconfigured remotely by the headend, so my guess is even if you're able to change something they'll overwrite it.

The keys are not present in the Registry by default, you'd have to add them. Keep in mind that NT is much better optimized for networking by default, and you might not notice such drastic difference in performance as with Windows 9x.

lag occurs somewhere on the path between you and the chat server, so you might want to try different ones. Your dial-up ISP propably uses different backbone provider, and you would have to test different servers to see which one works better with your new ISP.

Latency is almost entirely dependent on your ISP and their backbone provider. The Registry tweaks can optimize only your end of the connection, and that's not where latency occurs. Try asking your ISP to help you with that...

On the server PC, go to START>Programs and choose "MS-Dos Prompt". Type "tracert mail" and look for the numeric address in brackets. You have to replace the two "mail" settings with that numeric address.

Many Cable ISPs use just "mail" or "mail-server" for the mail server name. Resolve this to a numeric address and put the IP as your mail server in the client PCs. Let me know how it works out.

ISA NIC should be more than sufficient for ADSL and Cable Modems. Sometimes you can get a bit more speed by using PCI slots, however that's mostly because of the smaller CPU overhead rather than the maximum throughput.

There is almost nothing you can do on your end regarding packet loss and latency. Both are entirely dependent on your ISP and their backbone provider. The only thing you can do about packet loss is to check the coax cable going into your Cable Modem. It shouldn't be too long, and any splitters added ...

Most of the settings are not present by default. If they're not in the Registry, Windows uses the defaults listed at http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q158/4/74.ASP
Keep in mind that other programs might modify the settings too.
