IBM won't take RMAs on those drives unless it fails their proprietary self-booting DFT app. I have one that is totally fuxored and it still passes their app, so they won't RMA it. BTW....they must pi$$ on anyone who is using their drives in anything but a PC, because their DFT only runs on that ...

Splitters

Splitters have no effect on speed or 'sync', only the amount of signal power required to get back to the headend. It is only once your cable is split to the point that the modem is maxxed out that it will drop offline.

The wiring standard for most HFC cable companies these days is an RG56 drop to ...

highpass filter

FYI: A highpass filter is an in-line device that only allows certain frequencies to pass. The 'high' in 'highpass' filter means it only passes high freqs and blocks out low freqs.

Cable modems upload a low freqs....thus a hp filter will knock out your cable modem.

Cable companies typically use ...

ACK

Coming from a cable modem engineer: DO NOT USE BOOSTERS.

1. You should never need a booster if your wiring is right.

Why? You are going to boost the noise along with the signal, because the signal to noise ratio is already too low. Think of it like turning the volume up on a weak radio station ...

I just bought a "Gigabyte GA-7VRXP VIA KT333 5P1A3D RAID LAN V.2.0 RETAIL" for $103 from newegg.com. It has robust features (lan, audio, udma 133, raid, usb2.0, 7 usb ports) for a cheap price. No probs so far. It had mixed reviews, though and anything less than rev 2.0 is trouble.
