Hey guys I am putting a new sys together but I am looking to buy a P4 at 1.6GHz or XP1700+. or to save money the celeron at
1.7Ghz. What do you guys think. I dont do much gaming on my machines but I do lots of office work. I dont have a lot of money to spend so give a hand here which is better.

If you are looking for a quiet machine, then i would go p4 even thought it is unquestionably outperformed by the axp 1700+
If the system is going to be decked out with lots of hardware and you are going to need good case cooling anyway, go with the 1700+

Go for the AMD...
with a the 1800xp.. you can overclock it to a POST as a 2000. :-)

at stock speeds, the axp might have a slight edge, dont know about unquestionably though, would depend on the task. but as u can see from a previous thread of mine, they o/c nicely and with very little effort. no special hardware needed to o/c them either. you dont need a 500 jiggawatt psu or a 7k rpm fan on it to keep it from blowing up.
Jiggawatt? :rotfl: :rotfl: :rotfl:
AMD is the way to go !

i dunno, they're both good values and although i'm an amd all the way person, i don't think you'd have issues w/ the p4.. infact right now i think a good p4 w/ 845 combo would be a better buy than an athlon ddr combo.. u can get hte 1.6a up to 2.1GHz (equivalent to a 2000+ athlon or there abouts) EASILY w/ stock cooling.

With your reference to not having alot of money to spend you might consider the Celerons, with 256 cache and their clock speeds they are running circles around Durons and PIII's.
You say your not a gamer, again, the Cel's. Will run absolutly any office or graphics program on the market today, hell, an old 500 celeron will too :)
The Cel's will perform well on all games admirably.
The Celerons have come a long way in the last year, as have the other proc's
I just upped my server to a 1Ghz Cel / Gigabyte GA-6VTXE Mobo
With 192 Megs ram it is outperforming 1 gig AMD's and PIII's
They are all good processors these days, not much difference between any of them now except price.
AMD, you will want more fans to keep it cool but fast in games
PIV Is a little more expensive but less fans and will run all day with a stock HSF
Cel, great work horse, good bang for the buck.
Around here you will hear AMD, AMD, AMD and not much more.
With the current fair of chips take your pic, as long as it is not a Cyrix
Save a few on the proc and put it into a Vid card or and extra Hard drive
SiSoft sandra CPU bench of my 1Ghz Cel with no tweaking.
