View Full Version : ata-133 share ide with cdrom = lose the 133?
need some advice, i orderd a 52x IDE CD-ROM from Liteon, and want to add it to a pc non raid KR7-133. i have alrdy the Liteon burner & DVD, so i wanted to add this cdrom to the hdd ide lead, thing is, will i lose my ata 133 if i add this cdrom to the hdd?.

yea, people do say that..maybe i'm crazy...but bios and all my utils detect the hdd as still runnin at ata133...or 100 or whatever it is and the other device (be it a cdrom or hdd) running at it's max spec.. doesn't make sense... people say/claim all the time that it runs at the slower speed... i don't know for sure but it isn't what all my utils tell me shrug.

Your IDE controller will default to the speed of the slowest device on the chain.
Will this hurt your performance? Dunno, you have a 133 controller, but what is your hard drive that's hooked up to it? And even if it's a fast hard drive, it's the bottleneck, not your IDE controller slowing down to 100 or so.
you won't notice the difference regardless of what it's running at.

Where do you get you get your info on the fact the the Hard drive will revert to the slowest drive on the chain. That does not make any sense at all. The two drives are hooked in parallel so it shouldn't matter. It like having two light bulbs hooked in parallel one bulb being 40watt and the other 60 watt. Does the 60watt bulb run at 40 watt???

There never really was a point, except for the latest technology before Serial ATA fully comes out this spring/summer. Fastest hard drives are sustaining not much more than upper 40 megs throughput anyways.
