Need help choosing parts.

I might end up building myself a computer this year to congragulate my less then stellar sophmore year. (Big-arsed might there)

I have spent the last hour or so combing through old posts and reviews and figure now is the time for me to post something.

I need help on choosing a casemotherboard, proccesor, and video card. Let me outline really really basically what I am looking for...

Case- Antec Performence Plus Series??? I guess whatever works.
Processor- I am probobly going to go with an AMD card due to price constraints. Dont plan on OCing.
Video Card- Something around $200. I have like some fetish with ATI Radeon 8500s that you should probobly know about. ;)
Motherboard- Abit KT7? Oh i dunno just talking out of my ass by this point.


Heres what I have figured out I plan on...
Memory- · Crucial Micron 512MB 64x64 PC2100 DDR RAM at $140.00. Maybe eventually get another pieace and go over the gig mark :D
Sound Card- Hercules Fortissimo II (unless I could get out of it with somewhat decent onbaord sound.)
HD- A Maxtor Liquid Bearing drive at 7200RPM. THe size depends on how much money I have left. And also a 40 gig Seagate 5200RPM drive that I plan on using as my porn depository.
Media Drives- A DVD 16x Toshiba and a 16x TDK CD-RW that I already have.

Once I figure out what I would end up buying I would have to go speak with my parents about it. Past that I could put it together after I take the SAT II's June 3rd. So really ASAP.

I think I am going to go with a MAXTOP CSX-147K case with a 350 watt PSU for 49.00 (YOS thanks for the heads up on the Maxtop's ).


That leaves the mobo and video card as really crucial things to figure out before I finilize with my parents.

newegg has a epox 8k3a for $95,has kt333ce and ata133.version 1.0 supports 1500,1600,1700,1800 and 2100 amd xp cpu.i dunno why it doesnt support 1900 and 2000's.
newegg also has a 1800(1.53Ghz) OEM for $104.
and a ATI raedon 8500 128MB DDR for $225,do u do alot of gaming?
u also need a good HSF.

i know u said that u were considering amd b/c of cost but take a look at my post from earlier and see what u can get if u go the intel route. either way u will not go wrong as both are very nice these days. but dont discard intel as a choice based on price as it is not an issue anymore. i have updated the prices there to reflect what www.newegg.com is charging right now.

I am passing my current computer onto my little bro. I am going to take my CD-RW and my dump drive with me, but even the little man needs to use the floppy and cd every now and then.

everything youve picked out looks good. I know some won't agree with me here but i would suggest getting the 128mb gainward gf3. its only $25 more and will 'future proof' the deal a little better. being as your dad seems to be the one flipping the bill here, getting the card with the extra 64 mb of ram, will not necessarily give u more performance now but games will soon be coming out that have '64mb vid card recommended' and u will have it covered and then some. this might help ease the need to have to upgrade as soon.
