I've had this problem before and can't remember how to fix it.

When the screen saver turns on, or I start a game the picture distorts. I get a black bar about an inch thick on the top and bottom of the monitor and the picture streches off the end of the monitor.

I'm running the resolution @ 1024 X 768 and I've tried different refresh rates 60hz through 85hz, they all do the same thing. Even at 800 X 600 it happens.

I also tried overiding the refresh rate in Direct X.

ATI 8500LE and Win98SE, Asus mobo, 512Megs of ram, fresh install with all of the updates.

What the hell am I overlooking here?

most likely a drive issue,

but can't you solve the problem by adjusting the internal monitor size?

Other then this, the only other thing I can think of is that your videocard is bad? have no clue on this one, sorry roundeye.

terrancelam is probably right - a driver issue. Try reinstalling the driver it could have gotten corrupt. Did you do anything in particular prior to this happening?:)

Thanks for the input. I had to set the refresh rate to 85Hz and set the Direct X override to 60. Got everything to work except one game, and that's ones no big deal since it's a demo.
