Best for "WHAT" though? Because I'll rattle off quite a few. The 905 is a great workstation NIC....but you don't specify, because if you said "For a gaming server"...or some kind of server....I'd sugggest to kick it up a notch or two to the 990XP Server NIC. I have that in our public gaming server, a hundred concurrent hits of gamers, etc...and not a hint of breaking a sweat. It's a hundred bucks...but man does it have ballz.

Or speed? 10/100? or 10/100/1000?

For a gaming server? (LAN, or co-locate at ISP)
Or client?

Guessing you mean just client...yah, the good old 905 rocks. Not bad for a server either, does pretty well with up to 25 - 50 concurrent connections, depending on game.

Is the 3C905B-TX-NM (http://www.3com.com/products/en_US/detail.jsp?tab=features&sku=3C905B%2DTX%2DNM&pathtype=purchase) just as good? (I'm looking to save a bucks off newegg's shipping by getting this one elsewhere).

I think the only real diff between B and C is that C has WOL, which I doubt any1 really uses anyways....

I have a classic 3C905-TX, no B or C, and I think its actually BETTER than the "newer" B or C models cuz I seem to get more stable downloads and pings with it..... Probably cuz its got more Cache. I forgot the exact amount, but I remember it had more than the B, which I also have.

They don't make em like they used to :(

i like my newer 905Cs better than my old 905 that broke in transit before.

the 905C have WOL and non WOL versions too.

i think the pings are better with the 905Cs than the original

dunno about downloads

didnt know the cache was different, thats too bad

Ahh cool...one of the early models that says "Made in Ireland"? I have a bunch of those at home. Good stuff.

Did you call them up and get it replaced? One of the things about 3COM...easy warranty replacement.

Ya, 3com has lifetime warrenties, my original 905 got busted a few yrs ago, and I got a free replacement even tho the card was like 5 yrs old when it broke....

The original 905 I have is made in the USA, I have a few 905Bs, most are made in the US, 1 is made in Singapore. There was a sale on 905Bs a few yrs ago and I bought a few, only $30 CAD each!

Actually, I think the only diff between B and C is that C supports "remote managment" and C is PCI 2.2 compliant, which I doubt matters

I've had no problems sending them back. Just call up their support/warranty number (hit their website), read SN and product number to them, get an RMA, ship to Texas.

Ya, I got my replacement like a week after I mailed in my defective card, and all you need is the Serial # and batch code 'n stuff. Actually, the place where I sent my card was in my city so I guess thats why I got my replacement so fast (the replacement was mailed from the states tho)
