View Full Version : How do you command Netscape to ignore certain code in HTML?

Hey all. I thought I'd throw this in this forum, since I am cluttering up gen forum with stuff about my site.

I am trying to implement a scrolling marquee, but the problem I have discovered recently is that Nutscrape, er uh Netscape doesn't recognize a scrolling marquee and will simply display the text in static form.

My question is, is there some code that I can use to tell certain browsers to ignore specific portions of code or whole areas of an HTML document?

I think it can be done, but am not sure, and dont really know how I would do this.

Marquee is a Internet Explorer only feature, meaning it is not a part of the HTML 3.2 or HTML 4.0 standards. That's why it don't work in Netscape (or Opera or Konquerer or Mozilla or etc.). You can detect which browser is being used, via JavaScript, and write the HTML based on that. Something like this would be good enough:

if (navigator.appName == "Microsoft Internet Explorer" && parseInt(navigator.appVersion) >= 2){
} else {
document.write("everyone without explorer");

// -->

Thanks stu. Nice to meet you by the way. :D

So just place that in the head and all other browsers will ignore all of the text within marquee?

Is there an alternative way to do the same thing marquee does, say with javascript or something to that effect?

I've tried a few other methods but am having a tough time actually implementing them.

I'm not sure what you mean by scrolling marque.

Is this something like what you're looking for

If it is just grab the javascript out of the source code. Then you can adjust the size, speed, colour etc. however you want it.

I'm looking for one that scrolls from bottom to top like a vertical news ticker.

You can get something like that in Java form at Java Boutique (http://javaboutique.internet.com/text/) or in JavaScript form at Dynamic Drive (http://www.dynamicdrive.com/dynamicindex2/index.html)
