Can someone explain XML to me? just the basics

Hmm can someone explain XML to me, and my friend had a question, here it is:

:D I wouldsuggest you get a book on it. The HTML Black Book has a good portion of the book dedicated to XML, CGI, and Java and how they three work together.:D
