My MaxMTU is set at 1500, and MSS is 1460...What is causing the tweak test to see them different?

Your MTU is not set at 1500 sir, set it and retest, back here please with results :)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\NetTrans\0001

this is the place right? MaxMTU says 1500, MaxMSS says 1460.

0000 says the same thing...but for some reason I have a 0005, 6, 7, 8, 9 too.

go over to www.speedcorp.net (http://www.speedcorp.net) and download MAXMTU under their tweak section, this will change it everywhere :)

In registry go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\
System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP
Tcp1323 is set at 2 now, set it at 1, more on main page this site, under registry tweaks section.

What did you download vbs, whats that

drakken

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP does have TCP1323Opts says it's set at 1 already..want me to set it at 0?

I don't understand either. I did a registry search for 1420 and came up with nothing. All I can figure is it's on my ISP's end or maybe it's the Surfboard 4100...I'm at a loss. There is an MTU key under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP\Ndi\ATMDefaults but it's in hex and it says dc 23 00 00

Something else is wrong also the first post your RWIN #, now 95408, thats not right, must be your cable company, I'm sorry but I have never seen dslr read so many things wrong, call your cable company or maybe someone else has idea

I changed the rwin to 151 x 1460, but even that doesn't match up...it was 176 x 1460 to start with. Neither setting made any difference in downloads btw, heh.

What is your CPU and OS

drakken

I changed RWIN back to what i was b4. It's a P2 233 on Win98SE. I know i need a new puter

Drakken you either have a piece of hardware (i.e. router) or a piece of software (PPPOE) limiting your MSS/MTU. You can try to flash your router with a different firmware version to fix this problem.

drakken
03-05-01, 06:50 AM
All I have is the modem, and i have no idea what piece of software could be causing it. No firewall is running.

Lobo

Did you backup your registry first, you can not keep playing in the registry, these patchs put the correct settings in, if you change them, we have no idea what is going on, take tweak test and repost :)

drakken
03-05-01, 12:42 PM
Oh yeah it's backed up. I only used CableNut's Adjuster4 and that vbs you told me to run. I can use the old registry, and that was before I got cable...no new proggies since I got cable anyway. I'll have to do it when I get off work.

Lobo
03-05-01, 12:45 PM
Put old registry back in, do not change anything in there, run tweak test, post here

Lobo
03-05-01, 02:56 PM
The speed patchs put in all the correct numbers, RWIN, MTU, MSS whatever do not mess with with these numbers :)

Lobo
03-05-01, 03:04 PM
Also be informed that putting your registry back to default will result in you having to reinstall all programs since you installed Windows. The programs are still on your puter just not in registry, you've already downloaded them, just run installation again for them to be in registry, this is like reformatting. :)

Lobo
03-05-01, 03:52 PM
Also run defrag and sys file checker to make sure all your files are on your puter
Defrag, start, programs, accessories, system tools, disk defrag, you should put this in task schudler to run everyday. Here is how to run sys file checker, your files will be on your 98SE disk or 98 disk:
RUN DEFRAG AT LEAST EVERY 2 DAYS
People runnng WIN 98 or 98SE should run System File Checker once a week to make sure you have all files, all you really care about should be the Windows files and subfolders. To get to this, start, programs, accessories, system tools, system information. Click on tools in System information and it will be there. More information about it in Help.

Do this for me go here:
1. Go to http://forums.speedguide.net/optd.shtml and click on check connection.
2. Copy all this by highlighting everything in box with mouse
(you may have to make box smaller. To copy contents of box, highlight, then hit Ctrl & c, on your keyboard, when you return to Speedguide in reply box, with cursor blinking, hit Ctrl & v, this will copy contents in box so I may look at it. Thank you. Post results back here

MTU = 1500

MTU is at optimal value

MSS = 1380

MSS seems to be invalid... Should be a number between MTU-52 and MTU-40.
Linksys (and possibly other) broadband routers incorrectly limit MSS. If you are using such a router, consider updating its BIOS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 256960
Unscaled Receive Window = 64240

For optimum performance, consider changing RWIN to a multiple of MSS.
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
253920 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 4)
190440 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 3)
126960 (MSS x 46 * scale factor of 2)
63480 (MSS x 46)

bandwidth * delay product:

Your RcvWindow limits you to: 20556.8 kbps (2569.6 KBytes/s) @ 100ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 10278.4 kbps (1284.8 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 4111.36 kbps (513.92 KBytes/s) @ 500ms

TCP options string = 020405640103030201010402

Unscaled Receive Window = 64240

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = 1

Scaling (RFC1323) = 2 bits

Time to live = 52 hops

Timestamps (RFC1323) = 0

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = 1

IP type of service = 0

It's a little different, still says my mss is wrong. Is it possible the routers my isp is using could be causing that?

Lobo
03-05-01, 10:07 PM
You see with a MAXMTU of 1500, Windows should set your MSS at 1460, thats what it needs to be, but it does not seem to matter what you have in registry as it does not report it right, I would get on phone to cable co or ISP

Hey thanks guy, it's good info to pass along to them. Luckily it's still beta here, they're chock full of probs.
