View Full Version : how can I improve my DSL
I thought I was getting Earthlinks 1.5mbps/256kbps capable service, not so, as the allege its vendor constraints. So, since I'm stuck with a Earthlink-Genuity-Verizon 640/90 service here are my settings from TCP/IP analyzer:
------------------------------------------
SpeedGuide.net TCP/IP Analyzer
TCP properties for IP = x.xx.xx.xxx
Note: Read the FAQ if the above is not your IP address.
-------------------------------------------
TCP options string = 020405ac01010402
-------------------------------------------
MTU = 1492
MTU seems to be optimized for PPPoE... If you are not on a PPPoE connection, consider increasing your MTU to 1500 for optimal throughput.
MSS = 1452
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1452, which is equal to MSS.
MSS is optimized for PPPoE. If you are not on a PPPoE connection, consider increasing your MTU value.
Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 63888
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 0 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 63888
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
511104 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
255552 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
127776 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 2555.52 kbps (319.44 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 1022.208 kbps (127.776 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON
Time to live left = 52 hops
TTL value is ok.
Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF
Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON
IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000
What can I do to improve performance in downloading, uploading, gaming, ping, whatever,... help?
Is this a PPPoE connection :)
yes it is PPPoE. I use rasPPPoE :p :)
What type of speed are you getting with that connection... Not the subscribed speed..
What type of ping do you get can you post a "tracert speedguide.net" the reason maybe you arnt all that bad off.. You may be going up onto the Web faster than you think with the tracert I can usually tell you what router you go up on... The trace CAN NOT be to verizon or mindspring or earthlink as a matter of fact none of the Earthlink affiliats.
Your using RASPPPoE is the MaxFrameSize set to 1492 in the network neighborhood's properties..
Anything between 1492 and 1476 will help and being up at the highest amount doesnt always mean best I normally run mine at 1486 when I'm not on the router.. Generally helps in displaying web pages better..
Along with the speedguide web patch.
We can work on Rwin after we see your Tracert.
Just so I know. whats your OS(operating system) the test just aint enough and I'm posting this kinda late....
I'll try to get back here sometime today :)
As soon as possible
First things first, thank you, Dannjr and Lobo, for your help. 3:24am, yeesh, thx
again.
I'm using windows 2000 professional. (Here are the results from <tracert speedguide.net>:

...as far as my speed goes, here are some results: 2wire.com -------BANDWIDTH METER
(test done 3x, here is the average 518.03kbps = 64.75Kbytes/sec)
This is approximately 81% of my real bandwidth 640kbps -- I guess I should be happy...

Well, I take it I'm O.K. 'cause I'm better than 60% - 75% of my "real" maximum bandwidth
640/90. STILL, any help is appreciated ----Thx.
also, I have another question, it may be stupid, but, since I'm fairly new to this side of things, I feel as though I'm exempted from being smart =). Is it at all possible that there is a program or procedure to get to a particular destination faster? Example: I ran the <tracert> to your URL, speedguide.net, lets say I do a tracert to a SoF, Unreal Tourney or
Quake III server, why can't I just take the shortest route possible to the server, the route with the least amount of latency??? [shortest route as described by <tracert>]
:(
Here are some Rwin's for you to try.. If you use 255552 then the speedguide patch is all you would ever need.. ??? :) :(
31944 63888 127776 255552
If you run below 64240 then scaling is no longer a factor just to let you know.
I take it your a Gamer so the lower Rwin's might be best for your connection. ?
Thats questionable due to latency so your going to have to find out..
Also if your running Zone Alarm the newest one can give problems at times.. check out the Tini soft on the main page of Speadguide
DSL is noted for freeze conditions not as much in win2k but it can happen..
So run thsi FAQ http://www.dslreports.com/faq/faq#156 I put it here word for word cause the site is running slow at DSLR right now..
Stalls and freezes
If you are getting stalls when using your PC Before your new ADSL line has been activated, your new internal ADSL card could be attempting to talk to the network (which is not yet configured for you), and while it does this, your PC may freeze. The solution is to remove the drivers for the card and/or the card itself, until the ADSL line is activated by the Telco, then re-install from scratch.
If your PC is freezing regularly, and you are on PPPoE, your computer may be looking around for a DHCP server that does not exist. Check the following: (windows)
Open control panel
Open Network
Look for the first entry in the scroll box marked TCP/IP, that is associated with a hardware ethernet card (ignore dialup, AOL and VPN type bindings).
Select it and press properties
Select IP address from the tab
Is Obtain IP address automatically checked? if so, change that to Define IP address and enter 192.168.1.10, and 255.255.255.0, into IP address and subnet mask fields respectively
This assignment of a harmless local IP address to the TCP/IP settings bound (connected) to your network adaptor, will stop the in-built DHCP services from waking up every 10 minutes to look for a DHCP server so that it can "fill in the blanks".
Ping and tracerts
You really have no control over it. Yesterday I did a trace on a IP that was in china I think the trace went from chicago to sanfran looped back to chicago and ran over to china real nice path
Here is where your going up on the internet.
Its one of two spots
Its either right after the last quest.net or right at the first bbnplanet.net
Do a few more tracerts for yourself to differnt addy's see if the Quest changes if it doesnt then you go up at the last quest..
Yes you have the percentages right but there is no reason to not try to get as much as posible esp. in win2k.. Take your time. No real reason to rush it.
Glc1 mentioned this in the other thread..
Next your CLEC you have a 6 month contract with Earthlink starting about 2 months before it runs out tell Earthlink you want to be put on the Covad network they work close with covad and covad has not been bad at all.. Plus Earthlink has a little more control over it then.
I realize your pist at Earthlink right now but the Damage is done all due to the Rep. that was on the phone with you at the beginning..
Little trick with Earthlink you call early call often if you don't like what you here hang up and call again.. There had been allot of new people hired there 6 months ago and some of them still don't know what there doing... If your real fortunate you'll get someone that used to work for Mindspring there the ones that run the DSL anyway, or have been anyway.. they open there customer service at 7am tech support 24/7 except during certain holidays :)
No I don't work for Earthlink/Mindspring I just have to know I have several of these accounts in differnt places from Dialups to DSL..
The other account you could have got 768 aint all that. Ask anyone that has to deal with that other company direct they will tell you a few things...
Check your Hotmail Uhm got a return notice.

Thx for the very very helpful information. I sincerely appreciate your help Dannjr. yoos to, GLC1 and Lobo. I will apply it promptly and share my results in the appropriate discussion forum.
well, it is sort of funny now. I have been 'HAD' As inquisitive and paranoid as I am, I didn't think it was possible. lol........well, 40$ a month for 6 months, whew, gulp, suck it up suck it up....role with the punches....
