Ok first off I have tried every patch and have manually went in to the registry to tweak this pos!....Still the same old slow crap..I am suppose to have 1.5mg cable. I got win98se 900 athalon with a m7mke mobo and a 3comm modem.Currently my registry shows my rwin @513920..but when I run the analyzer I get this.....

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1460, which is equal to MSS.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 1456
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 3 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 182
RWIN is invalid

bandwidth * delay product:

RWIN is invalid

Consider increasing your RWIN value to optimize TCP/IP for broadband.
MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 51 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = OFF

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

Now i read somewhere on here that I needed a patch for win98se because of a math error you couldn't run a high rwin..well I installed the patch and I still get the same results...My speed is horrible rarely getting over 160kbps down and around 340kbps up...in peak hours I run darn near 56k speeds
some one please help me!....sometimes I think the cable runs to the cable company's office and they plug it in to a phone line!!!

If any of you out there can look at this and have any suggestions outside of moving or blowing the cable company up ( j/k )no matter how remote please send it my way..thanx

yes I can send you somewhere good to get speed patch since you do not have a default registry, I'll tell you how if you like :)

I can tell your alittle hot so I'll leave you directions, you can't use a RWIN number like 513 whatever as at night the pings and packetloss would be out of this world do this, and after test, the same as above and post here so I can see if patch is in, do this:
First go to www.cablenut.com (http://www.cablenut.com) , click on software at top of page
Download 4.0
His patch will uninstall previous patchs
Install 4.0 you also need to download and install Vtcp386 on his site
If you are running WIN 95 or ME then install 4.02 in same folder as 4.0 You don't need this
Then on desktop click on cablenut 4.0
Click on ccs files
then click on cable
Select fast cable
this will enter settings
click on save to registry at bottom, reboot or it will not work.
(NOTE) If you are running WIN 98 or SE, you need to download and install Vtcp386 for patch for 4.0 to work.
If you decide to remove Cablenut's patch, use uninstaller in Cablenut 4.0 folder on desktop. This will take you back to Windows default.
Retest and repost so I can see if patch is in
:)

I'll get right on it and tell ya how it goes....I forgot to mention I have tried other rwin settings from the default on up to my last...nothing seems to help at all...about a month ago I did do the cablenut patches..no help ...but I will try again maybe I messed something up....Thanx for the help..and I will keep ya posted

Lobo
03-17-01, 06:43 PM
I think you may have downloaded the Vtcp386 for WIN 95, delete it and redownload the one for WIN 98 :)

Lobo

No your not done yet, do this , you may want to print this:
Go to main page this site, select patches on left side of page,
go down until you see Web Patch - faster loading of Web Pages
Select the one for your OS, and download.
To install, click on what you just downloaded-unzip to program files, go there and click on it, click yes and reboot, your done. See even if you downloaded it before Cablenut's uninstalled it, so you have to do again.
Now this is very important:
This is a must unless you the future in want to format because you did not do it, please do this. First bring up REGEDIT, type REGEDIT in your run box and hit OK.
Under Registry at the top of the box, click on that, now click on Export Registry File, a box will come up asking where you want to export it to, just put it in your C drive, then name it at the bottem of box, Registry plus date. Click on ALL at the bottom so it copies all of your registry.
Click on save.
Now if you ever get in trouble or want the old regestry back, bring REGEDIT back up and click on Registry and click on import registry file, go to your C drive and click on registry and click open, reboot and your good to go.
Anytime you add a new program, backup again, any program, back it up to the same place as the last one, it will overwrite it. If you do not backup after each new program is instaled you will not have those setting's in regestry if you have to backup for some reason.

Do nothing else in this box as it is the heart of your computer, just what it says above and no more!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How do do speed test
1. The best time is early in the morning (3 AM - 6 AM)
2. Make sure defrag has been run so no files are fragmented
3. Delete Temp internet files, not while testing, but after each test. IE browser, click tools, internet options, click on delete files and no this will not harm system, just get rid of temp files
4. Go to a fast server such as www.happypuppy.com (http://www.happypuppy.com) and click on 10 demos, select a LARGE file to download (not all of it of download, just most of it, before you click cancel) this will show you how fast you are downloading, it's not going to be quick except except early in morning when not many people on net. I recommend you go to www.analogX.com (http://www.analogX.com) and download Net State live, run this while downloading as it will give you avg of your download speed.
5. Probably the most important, nothing can be running during test, no firewalls, no virus stuff, no ICQ, no AIM (some of you may have to go into BIOS to disable virus scanner, nothing running except Net Stat live
Scheduled tasks will run disk defrag, 98 & SE in Taskbar, WIN ME in control panel
The people who want speed surfing or doing whatever must close all other programs.

Or if you wish you may go to www.testmyspeed.com (http://www.testmyspeed.com) and do one of the online tests, these vary to much for me but you may like them. Another one is at www.dslreports.com/tools (http://www.dslreports.com/tools) :p

Being a glutton for punishment I decided what the hell and did a speed test now from dsl reports site...grrrrrrr

my best speed there was 198 up and 214 or 3 times faster than 56k.....far cry from up to 50 times faster huh? lol...I would be happy with 10 times faster I don't ask for much lol

no windows socket 2 on my hard drive anywhere....any other suggestions?

Lobo

Reboot about 4 time then take our test

Lobo
03-17-01, 07:31 PM
One last thing to try, click on Cablenut 4.0 on desktop, click on adjuster, make sure in the box that says Tcp1323Opts there is a 1, if not make it a 1, click on save to registry at bottom, reboot retest :)

ok.....d/l the patch fix...rebooted 7 or 8 times rwin still at 1460 at the analyzer...just for ****s and giggles I went to my registry and the rwin is set at 204400 So why isn't it showing it on the analyzer...and I ran another speed test it was worse then my last post 145 down 205 up
....is this a hopeless cause am I condemned to this crappy cable conn?...been on the phone with cable co tech...they give me the run around and tell me it is the comp...Well any other suggestions before I take a shotgun to this thing?

Lobo
03-17-01, 07:48 PM
That msg was for other guy, do you have a old backup registry

driver82633
03-17-01, 07:49 PM
yeah I backed up registry about a month ago when I went in and figured I would tweak it manualy....before I posted I imported the original from a month ago and nothing changed so I put the other backup that I had made with the tweaks in...

Lobo
03-17-01, 07:52 PM
So what you are saying is backuped one is already in

driver82633
03-17-01, 07:58 PM
yeah the back up is in with the vtcp386 for 98 and the fix and the cable nut

Lobo
03-17-01, 08:03 PM
Well to be honest with you I don't think it's the cable, I think you need to put on big pot of coffee and format, not repartition, just format, and backup registry first, always keep a default one and another as time goes by, sorry, but somethings been done and I have no idea what it could be

driver82633
03-17-01, 08:09 PM
ok I'll format..this comp is mostly for gaming so it doesn't have anything real vital on it...about six weeks ago I got a new hd for it a and installed widows fresh..and my speed hasn't changed from before to now...so I really don't think this will do it, but I am getting depserate so it is worth a shot...I'll format again and do all the stuff you told me to do earlier and then go from there...Got the coffee on and a beer in hand and in an hour I'll tackle this thing lol

Lobo
03-17-01, 08:12 PM
Well good luck and make sure you clean the disks off good, and come back if you have any problems :p

Philip
03-17-01, 08:20 PM
driver82633, make sure the Analyzer shows the correct IP address for this PC... You mention it's a gaming PC, do you have a LAN ? Are you using a router ? One external IP or each PC has its own ?

Also, instead of reformatting, you might try removing and reinstalling TCP/IP first.

Just some questions/thoughts.

driver82633
03-18-01, 01:36 PM
Ok lobo, formated and did all in the post still no go...the nic is on it's own irq and there are no conflicts anywhere..I even allocated ram to the nic..and there is no difference between allocating ram and not..(right now ram is still allocated....any other Ideas man?...It figures I knew this would be a problem lol...

driver82633
03-18-01, 01:39 PM
Phillip....yeah it shows the right Ip..I have no router..god forbid could ya imagine the speed with 2 or more comps hooked to it lol...I just got the modem runnin directly to my nic..just basic stuff...no usb or anything involved .....

driver82633
03-18-01, 04:41 PM
ok lobo...I changed the TCP1323ops to 3..I have a system recovery disk for the comp not a win98 cd...Checked the site and the driver I got is the driver for the NIC...The cable company supplied that with the service and I called the cable company and made sure it was the right driver after an hour on the phone with them the assure me it is the current one..here's what the analyzer says:TCP options string = 020405b4010303020101080a000000000000000001010402

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1448, which is less than MSS because of Timestamps, or other TCP/IP options used.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 1460
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 2 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 365
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)

Your RcvWindow limits you to: 23.36 kbps (2.92 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
Consider increasing your RWIN value to optimize TCP/IP for broadband.

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 51 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = ON
Note: Timestamps add 12 bytes to the TCP header of each packet, reducing the space available for useful data.

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

Looks like the rwin is the same no change on the rest as far as I can tell...

Whoes NIC card is in pooter, and do you have another :p

driver82633
03-18-01, 05:11 PM
No I don't have another NIC...but here is something interesting...at least to me the device manager and the cable company said it was a realtech 8029 (as)....but when I opened up the comp..the card itself has a kingston sticker on it but I don't see a model# on it just a serial number I went to the kingston site but I can't search the serial number down..and the pics of the Nic on the site none of them look like the one I got exactly....any Ideas?

Lobo
03-18-01, 05:15 PM
In device manager, uder network adapter your NIC card, where it says driver at top, click on update driver and let Windows search for driver :)

driver82633
03-18-01, 05:22 PM
Well it did it's thing and said the best driver for it was already installed...grrrrrr

Lobo
03-18-01, 05:27 PM
Well it could only be a few things, Windows
you've done that, next, I know your going to hate it but the info in your puter is not getting out so that leaves NIC, can you put in in other slot, it may be loose, if that does not do it then cable co will have to replace NIC

Lobo
03-18-01, 05:32 PM
Go to control panel, internet options, connections at top, LAN settings at botom, NOTHING in here should be checked,no proxy, no auto detect, nothing, in Network properties make sure you have right pooter name and workgroup entered

driver82633
03-18-01, 05:49 PM
Well I have moved it to 3 other slots and made sure it wasn't loose. I have the same thing ( of course )....The cable company told me last night that if I am getting on the internet then the modem and NIC is fine as far as they are concerned...so I guess I'll go buy one...there is no comp shops here and it is an hour drive to the dreaded Staples.( btw those peope know less then I do lol )So it will be a few days before I can get in there...what kind of nic do you recommend? ..and I will look for it...money is no object if it will fix this darn thing...Is there anything else that you can think of? I think I have already done every thing you know to try...but it is worth asking again lol

Lobo
03-18-01, 05:50 PM
In Network properties go to identification tab at top, computer name who be the number or name on your installation papers or call the toll free number to your provider, they know name

driver82633

well no...the cable company said it ws the right one...and since I see that the card has a kingston sticker and the comp and the cable co. says it is a realtech 8029 ...didn't think it was a good idea ...don't want to screw it up more lol

Lobo
03-18-01, 06:37 PM
Yes but if you formatted, it removed it, right

driver82633
03-18-01, 06:45 PM
well I assume it did..but all I did was stick the nic card in it then windows found the driver for it....the cable company didn't give me a disk for it, and I don't believe the cable tech used a disk either he just shut down the comp stuck it in and started the comp back up...

Lobo
03-18-01, 06:47 PM

driver82633
03-18-01, 06:53 PM

Lobo
03-18-01, 06:59 PM
Go to C drive, under file, select new, name it Realtech, go there and download driver for the name cable company gave you into this new file. After downloading driver go to this file and open, it may have install or setup file, click on it, reboot, check to see if driver changed in device manager, if not point it to this folder, I believe the other company just makes them for Realtech

I just tried our tweak tester and got same msg as you, there working on it, go to www.pcpitstop.com (http://www.pcpitstop.com) and take test. at top of IE where it says tools click on that before test, internet options, delete files, it's OK their only temp files and you always do this before any test speed downloading whatever, also put disk defrag to run everyday in scheduled tasks, the patch is in, it was the driver :p

Well at least you don't need new NIC, patch is in, no speed at night, your pings are high but will wait till tomorrow to see if they are still high, we might be able to fix that if Cablenut or Dannjr will help us, HELP
lol

OK, go to main page this site, click on registry tweaks, I want you to bring up registry, directions are thier, go to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\
System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Class\NetTrans\000n In all the 000n things I want you to make sure MTU is 1500, not dialup of 576
if you see a 576 click on it on right hand side, the begining, then at top, edit, then modify, change to 1500, go thru all 000n numbers :)

Ok i will do the other stuff right now here is the results from the anylyzer...why does it show it at 1460 again when the other site don"tTCP options string = 020405b4010303020101080a000000000000000001010402

MTU = 1500
MTU is fully optimized for broadband.

MSS = 1460
Maximum useful data in each packet = 1448, which is less than MSS because of Timestamps, or other TCP/IP options used.

Default Receive Window (RWIN) = 1460
RWIN Scaling (RFC1323) = 2 bits
Unscaled Receive Window = 365
RWIN is a multiple of MSS
Other values for RWIN that might work well with your current MTU/MSS:
513920 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 8)
256960 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 4)
128480 (MSS x 44 * scale factor of 2)
64240 (MSS x 44)

bandwidth * delay product:
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 58.4 kbps (7.3 KBytes/s) @ 200ms
Your RcvWindow limits you to: 23.36 kbps (2.92 KBytes/s) @ 500ms
Consider increasing your RWIN value to optimize TCP/IP for broadband.

MTU Discovery (RFC1191) = ON

Time to live left = 51 hops
TTL value is ok.

Timestamps (RFC1323) = ON
Note: Timestamps add 12 bytes to the TCP header of each packet, reducing the space available for useful data.

Selective Acknowledgements (RFC2018) = ON

IP type of service field (RFC1349)= 00000000

Gee this is fun isin't it, I don't know answer to question but do this, your ISP may use MTU of 1496 so on cablenut adjuster, inside 4.0 on desktop change MAXMTU to 1496,
Tcp1323Opts back to 1, RWIN to 385440 and leave GlobalMax blank, click save to registry at bottom, reboot, retest at www.dslreports.com/tools (http://www.dslreports.com/tools) Tweak test, check verbose box, you also need firewall a good free one is at www.zonelabs.com, (http://www.zonelabs.com,) I use it and it's great, but do that later, it is important to have one

Ok man i read the registry tweaks and your instuctions...but when I do that i don't see 000n..I see 0000,0001,0002,0003,0004, it goes to 0009 but 5-9 have nothing in them..anyways I clicked on 0001-0004 and I don't see the mtu anywhere...this is what i see only 0001 had Ip address and sub net mask(which I assume is the one but there is no mention of mtu....default,device VxD's,DevLoader,Driverdate,DriverDesc,Infpath,InfSectionInstallVnbt,Ipadress,IpMask,NodeType,Provide rname....no mtu to be found WHAT UP WITH THAT LOL

Don't worry about that just making sure, on to adjuster above :)

Ok I will do the cablenut adjustments now...Firewall!!!!! Why in the world would I need this( don't I got enough problems lol) really man this comp has nothing on there of any Importance...so why bother if I get a virus..just reformat or get a new hd....besides a virus right now would take care of my little ol problem now wouldn't it lol...

Lobo

You have to have firewall to keep hackers (Kiddies) from making you have to reformatt

True that you may not have confidential or private intellectual property on your machine, and that the need for a firewall may not exist from your perspective. However, in light of the many DDoS (distributed denial of service) attacks occurring daily, a firewall on your machine is really a "internet community" safety precaution. DDoS attacks often utilize computers unbeknownst to the computer owner/operator, by taking control of the client machine via trojan horse or other malicious code. In any event, you can get a free firewall at http://www.zonealarm.com. You can also read more about securing your machine on the SpeedGuide Security forum.

Thanks, and good luck with your tweak probs!

driver82633 your RWIN is way to big for the results you are getting. I would suggest tuning your RWIN to 32032 and turning Tcp1323Opts to "0" I would also suggest doing a ping test from dslreports to see if your network has any problems.
