Have just set up two identical PCs (P111 450s)with SMC nics, peer>peer using Client for MS Networks. Running Office 97 under Win98SE - all fine initially, drives defragged & PCs operated perfectly. After installing the PCs and copying data files (maybe 20-30Mb of xls & doc files) to them, setting up some printers etc, the Win98 shutdown process has slowed, even stopped completely. Checked drives & they require a major defrag which may help. Explorer also giving Illegal Ops messages now on one PC for no apparent reason. Any tricks, tips or workarounds to fix these problems appreciated.

Yeah W98 can be a networking pain in the neck. I have a similar problem at times. The fix is easy. Logoff, logback on and then shutdown. (If nessary do it to both machines).

9x has problems properly releasing the IP quite often. So far, at our store, we have found the easiest solution to completely remove everything (TCP\IP, Client for MS Networks, etc) from Network properties, reboot, then reinstall everything. works 99.9% of the time. Dunno why, just another bug in MS's code.

Ta - that was next on list of things to try. Only prob is that there is one of those Brother multifunction machines connected which goes diabolical when things are reset. Ever tried reinstalling one? Have to hunt thru registry and several directories to delete files (even after running its uninstall !!) before rebooting & reloading. Swine of a thing. Ah so

OH - & one other thing. I have found that MS has a supplementary download for Win98SE shutdown. Supposedly fixes the problem. Is posted on its windowsupdate site BUT - damn you Bill G - if you are trying to do the download from a PC with a different version of Windows, you cant get to the SE downloads, only to files relating to that particular version. Whacked again.
