Anyone know the difference between "managed" and "unmanaged" switches? I'm guessing that since the managed switches are 4-5 time more expensive than unmanaged that they are superior.

Anyone know what makes them better? Are they worth the extra money for a simple home LAN?

Managed switches allow a user to define many settings for others. Such as broadcast settings. For networks with many users, an admin. can use the mgmt. capabilities to analyze the problem for faster resolution. Unless you just have the x-tra dough to blow, get the unmanaged switch. Benefits of a switch, no x-tra money for the stuff you won't use.
