I've applied the optimizer patch, then uninstalled using the default patch. While the download speed of files is much faster, I cannot play Unreal anymore. I have faster pings but the stability is horrible. I play fine for like 2 minutes, then hit a 30 second lag pocket that sends my ping from 45ms to 600ms and the screen is so choppy I often happily walk off platforms to my death. : ) After the thirty seconds its fine for 2 minutes, then back to the lag. Obviously it unplayable. I've reinstalled all my network components, reset my modem, defraged, scandisked, re-installed the game to no avail. I've tried alloting extra memory to the nic, pinging my ISP to get unfragmented packets and changed my MTU setting appropriatly. I've now learned more than I ever want to learn about my cable modem and its settings. All these adjustments have not seems to make a bit of difference when I go back to UT. It's one of my favorite games and I would hate to have to hang up my sniper rifle because of my fumbling. Any help would be great. I hang out in IRC a lot irc.snowhill.com #CovetousCrew.

I have the same problem and have been working on this for a couple of weeks off and on...I have not gotton very far...The best scenrio so far is use the patch here that sets everything back to default 9.x settings and then manually set in registry the default Rcv Window to 32767...go to win98 registy tweak section on this site for info... This sucks because it seems to be a UT setting or netcode that does not work well with cable...I do great on 56k and Q3 works great on Cable...UT can be great on cable but frequently gives me alot of grief with major ping spiking....damn it this is my favorite game....\
