successful 56k modem gaming

I want to hear from people with the old "steam powered" 56k modems. We all know the the amount of frags you rack up is inversely proportional to the ping you get on the game server. So what kinds of modems (internal/external) and what setup/system tweaks have you found to work the best.

I dont have 56k, but hardware modem is the way to go. (none-winmodem)

to my best/favorite quake2 servers i have an average ping of 140-170 while playing (usually around 110-125 idle).

diamond supra express 56k internal

no tweaks at all. (except i put my rate to 3500 and set my max fps to 50). (in quake2).

im running win2000 also.

btw the servers arent THAT local to me , there about 200-300 miles away.

Must be nice im getting a 190 to a 250 avarage ping on q2 and UT, It used to work well but with all the low pingers around every time I get near one I lag long enough to get killed. im running a 3com 56k modem on a p3 450mhz with a voodoo 3 3000 video card
and I also have my q2 settings at 3700 max connection and 50 fps.

yeah its pretty nice , but its only to a handfull of servers. compared to everyone else having 30-60 pings its not THAT good.

There are numerous tips on this page to improve your connection, ping, and general system performance.
This site has improved my ping from a 300 avg to 150. Its really a great site.

Hayes Accura 56k Internal. Don't go with any WinModem/software-based modem setups, They're the Yugos of Modems. Also, make sure you have a good ISP. I had one local ISP that I got decent ping, lots of lag on, tried a national ISP, much lower ping, less spikes.

Hey maroon,

Search for 3Fingers game tweaks for modems and dial up. It will cut you ping by up to 50m/s for most games!!!!

i have tried a ton of modems. hardware/winmodem/internal/external and by far the best has been my diamond supra express external usb, which is my dsl backup. q3/ut pings were in the 150-200 range, and it was pretty smooth for a 56k.
