View Full Version : CABLE FOR GAMING IS......

not what you expect.... try getting good ping when you have a million people on the node, and everyone setting up servers, downloading, etc. i play quake 2, and around 4-5PM (Hawaiian Time) get 100 ping, but after, its 800!!! plus ping. If you have trouble with ping for cable, i suggest you get DSL. Im doing that. and if you can't, well, i dont know what you can do.

I'm having the same problems. I assume you're on RR too. ping ave for me is 365ms to msn gaming zone for quake2 and same thing through gamespy for Unreal.
Note..i still have my dial up active so i tried it out thrugh Hawaii Online... my ping to the same servers were 60ms average!

Road Runner = LAG! (good d/l speeds though)

heero

yeah, im on RR,and i agree rr is lag. i told them there were many bandwith on my node, but they were just bullsh*tin... good thing im getting dsl.

I have cable and during none peak hours i ping great. Anywhere from 27ms to 50ms on good servers. (In game its about 20ms-30ms higher cause im on a **** p166).

During peak hours 6-11 it sucks really bad. Ping is about 40ms higher.

I am on Optimum Online.

is cable and ADSL the same?
which one is faster cuz I think Im gonna get ADSL!

heero
05-21-00, 03:56 PM
well i would say DSL is better because of non shared bandwith, plus with the tweaks you can DL just like cable speed.

Veech
05-21-00, 07:03 PM
Not true heero.

DSL gets worse with distance. The farther away you are from your CO the higher the ping and slower the d/l speeds.

the fastest average user dsl is 1.5mbps

and cable is usually from 1-3mbps.

DSL if its working right gets great pings better than cable, but slower downloads and web surfing.

now lets look at cable

Cable the distance doesnt matter, but the amount of people having it does since its shared. Cable is super fast off-peak times. I myself ping 26 to some servers. But in game around 40 because im on a **** p166.

Cable costs less than dsl too.

what is the ping for ADSL on a normal server like a 4 green dot server??
i have a 56K right now and my ping is from like 400-600 on a 4 green dot server!
so what would be the ping if I went to a 4 dot green server with ADSL?

Bozzman
05-22-00, 01:53 PM
You can ping just as good with IDSL thats 35000ft from the CO than with ADSL thats 5000ft from the CO. Distance really only affects your D/L speed not your ping.

With DSL it all depends on where your gateway and how you'll ping. Lets say your have speakeasy but live in Atlanta.Speakeasy has to route your packets to Seattle just for the first hop! That means your gonna ping like crap to everywhere even a server in your own town. Well not crap but not the 10-20 that you should at the server but more like 80-100.SO when you look into gettin DSL make sure you go with a provider that has a local POP or NOC.

Swat its impossible to tell you what you'd ping to a server without even having the service http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif Too give you an idea of how I ping with my ADSL. Almost any server on the east coast I ping under 100 to. I'm in Ft Lauderdale BTW. Even servers up in Canada I ping around 90-100 too! European servers are 130-200 so even those are playable.

The reason I love my ADSL so much and wouldn't even consider cable again is cause its solid as a T1.Always less than a 5ms ping variance, never any PL unless its the server. My speeds are always 152k a sec my bandwith stays the same, no waitin till 3am to d/l stuff cause some idiots runnin an ftp or warez or some crap like that.

I could go off really, but everyone of you thats on cable knows of these problems already http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif I mean how many times do I have to hear people complaining on servers that they're having PL and ping spikes up the ass. I really feel for em too, its horrible seeing them chop around the map like a slideshow. When everyone starts jumping ship for DSL maybe the cable companies will wake up.

im glad that everyone replied...
well im getting DSL (CO 8000 ft away) Bronze Plus (768DL 128UL) and free modem too. I'm also paying about 50 bucks though, more then cable. I really think powerdownloaders are more better off in cable, but for us gamers we need the DSL ping. My friends on DSL and he gets 100-150 ping on our fav Q2 server. Right now RR i only get that kind of ping in the wee hours.... MY DL Is about 100k though....

can someone please tell me what I'll ping in HL or Q3...becuase I really am keen on getting a good ping!
the ADSL Im getting is 384k...and Im about 12-14km away from a CO!just tell me someone!please!how my ping will be in a normal server!IM really desperate for this ADSL!
thanx alot!

what does dl or ul stand for?

MadMaN
05-23-00, 11:02 PM
dl and ul mean Download and Upload. However I do not know who was using them and in what they were using them for...

anywas, there is no promises for DSL connections as to what your ping will be. Same with the cable. Location, Server clutter, heck, even the cable lines and phonelines will slow you down if they are old and about ready to be replaced. The type of computer you run will make a difference as well, same with your providers proxy settings and firewall settings(if you have any)

however, to take a shot out in the open expect to get in the 100 to 50 ping range on a cool game http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif Mind you those are decent servers. On my cable i come across servers that have 400 ping. and they are located on the other side of the border. http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif so, depends if the nodes are stalked full of crazed bandwidth users too http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif

Basically, cross your fingers and do what you can on your side.

hehe, oh which reminds me... How many of you guys who are running those Cable modems too? well if you havent read all that you can on them here at www.speedguide.net, (http://www.speedguide.net,) you better http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif I dedicated 4megs of ram to my cable modem through the system.ini as it suggested (made a back up of course tho http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/biggrin.gif) anyways, it turned out so nicely, i can handle a lot more and i tend to hog up the bandwidth on my server. http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif hehe

Tweak = Kind of a slang term we like to use when we adjust little settings that have large affects or even little ones ( I like to look at the bright side ). Basically, by tweaking settings of things we own we can make the most of it.

How will it affect your ping? Depends, sometimes not at all, however I found the that when i tweaked my cable modem using the www.speedguide.net (http://www.speedguide.net) info, my ping dropped twenty. Which I loved. However, the information on speedguide is not necessarily the best for you http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif

I'd recommend taking a look at the Tweaks section, try to learn as much as you can before you make any adjustsments though, because often in your first tweak or two you make a little mistake that comes back to haunt you. ***Mutters something about editing his system.Ini file one day*** http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

i've been told that with my phone company that i am 2km or 6400 feet from the repeater
and that I would qualify for 1.5meg DOWN and .5meg UP, what does that equate to in real world numbers??
mostly for gaming,
I have @home now

******* me, I had the up and down reversed.
fixed now!

That equates to some seriously crazy pings!!! I am not sure how much it is gonna set u back but if it is around 50 dollars you should not even hesitate! I am currently on @home and my downloads range from 45 k - 409 k per sec and it depends on the server you are downloading from. Most of my downloads fall in the 260k range. Anyhow on THUNDERDOME Q3 server I always ping at 30ms and I have never seen my ping rise above 100ms AT ANY TIME IN THE DAY. I dont know but I guess not many people have cable anything on my node because even the installation guy said "Woah". I have been quite happy wiht my cable service in realtion to downloading and the added low ping in games servers is just a PLUS! I have not edited anything (tweaks etc...) and I am wondering how much more bandwith can be squeezed out of the line... I guess I will set my sights on the 500k per sec DL, heheh I remember the days of 56k I used to cross my fingers for 6k per sec OMFG!

Heero, I just got rr and it hasn't been acting up on me too bad. I get downloads of around 2-500 K bytes during peak times. I was playing Quake 2 on a crappy server and was still pinging 124 ms. Maybe its because you live in the city or something? I don't know. I wouldn't be so quick to get Dsl though. For starters you won't even get 1mBit p/s on your fastest downloads, when you can get much higher off rr. Also rr isn't capped. I was uploading around 60 KBytes to some poeple. Also I heard GTE DSL sucks, it's a rip off as well. The cheapest you can get DSL is only $50 Don't even get me started on bandwith usage charges, Unless your going for an elite ISP, like Flex...

heero
06-09-00, 02:59 PM
hey
next week im getting ADSL from gte, ISP from flex. Gte's not that expensive, its only 32.50 for bronze plus. Also a FLex 24.95 for Dialup and ADSL! Thats only about 55 bucks! Cheap!
but my friend says he gets 40-60kilobytes sec, so im wondering if the tweaks will increase that?

fanta
06-09-00, 04:56 PM
Well thats cheap for the islands but compared to most people in the states and canada they get DSL of at least 1.5mBits p/s for cheaper than the 768/128 plan. Oh well though, it's going to go down in costs. Tell me how your dls are and your gaming pings.

Leased line all the way, baby! http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

Got a leased line at work, and I get the best of both worlds http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/smile.gif

My usual ping to servers halfway across the continent (which are the ones I usually go to anyway) is 50 ms

The only times I go over 100 are on european servers, and on servers that cap rate/maxpackets

Downloads usually range from 100-200k per second (Don't start your "I get 500k per second" ****, consider the fact that this is in a huge 12 story office building across an entire 10/100 network before you run your mouth. Let's see you do THAT with cable, bitch!) and web pages load up instantly http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

*Sigh* back at home though, neither cable nor dsl are available, and leased lines cost a fortune and a half. ISDN costs $53 a month with $20 a month for the service. $216 installation http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/eek.gif

DSL won't be here til october. But then it'll be $40 a month! http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

So I'm zippin along at a speedy ol' 26,400 bps http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/biggrin.gif

I got RR cable, and am getting 40-50 in-game constant ping on the best UT servers...but that's cause almost nobody in my area has it, they don't even have PCs.... DSL is better if you're living in an area where many people have cable, so that you won't have to share it, but if you're living in a place with almost nobody on it, get cable. I know that in the future more ppl are gonna be getting it, but probably free cable providers'll appear, they already have freedsl ones. One reason for that is the coming of that new Ultraband, which is going to cost about as much as cable and dsl, and will be at a constant bandwidth of 40MB/s, no sharing. That'll cause cable services to lower their prices to almost free, or free, like it is now with 56k (which was before what cable costs now) and dsl. www.freedsl.com (http://www.freedsl.com) for free dsl
And whoever thinks I'm B$ing about the Ultraband, check www.ultraband.com (http://www.ultraband.com)

hey
i'm using the @home service here in London Ontario. playing quake 3 (something i do everyday almost) is getting to be a hassle with my cable modem, cuz pings can get pretty high, and pretty annoying. and its sometimes brought up because other poeple on that server have high pings as well. thats really annoying

For gaming I find DSL to be the best!! I had cable and during peak hours, usally after 1pm, my ping would jump up from 50 to almost 200 at times. Most of my neighbors have cable so cable was the wrong choice for me.

With pacbell DSL, my ping is very stable 40 +/- 10 pings. No more ping surges for me!! I'm less than 5000 feet from the CO and my speed is 1.4m/128. Ya baby!!

Cable for gaming is great for me BUT it's backbone problems with the company your signed up to that really screw you. Especially if they are between your gateway and the backbone provider, for instance my ping problems always happen in between my providers uunetgateway to uunets backbone so the link between the gateway and the backbone gets overloaded almost every night and it sucks but I can play during the day or in the off hours from about 11-2am at night or most of the day till about 6-7 in the evening. From 7-11 pings go way up to 200-300 and it sucks. http://www.speedguide.net/ubb/tongue.gif

Anyways for instance many @home service providers have backbone providers and if your local @home service chose a cheaper backbone provider then you're probably pretty screwed, for instance I go through UUNET and ALTERNET which is a pretty decent line, most of the pings on the east coast for me are pretty cool but I hear ottawa (in canada anyway) is one of the best places to get fast pings all over east/west coast. It all depends where you are in the network segment will determine what your ping will be usually, each hop from say for example UUNET --> ALTERNET --> BELLSOUTH usually adds 25-50ms depending on how overloaded the links between the router/node/gateway and all the nodes/routers on each backbone is heh.

"Tuesday 6/20/00; The latency issue to one of our primary Internet backbone providers has been resolved by said provider by the addition of another router (Internet switch) to one of their mainland facilities on 6/14/00. This was done to address the higher than normal latency (ping) we have been seeing for the past month. Network monitoring has shown improvements in browsing performance through peak hours. Oceanic and Road Runner will continue to monitor this issue."

I've had good luck with online gaming, especially once I got a crappy cable modem replaced. My average pings to AT&T servers in California (I'm in Colorado) are anywhere from 35 to 75. Pretty stable, even during peak hours, I played all weekend.

OMG GTE sucks so bad it's not even funny!

I have DSL through EarthLink via GTE. EarthLink has a unique agreement in that GTE provides all internet-connection related service, and EarthLink provides news and mail. So it's basically GTE 768/128. My average bandwidth is ~400/110 after tweaking to hell and back! Before tweaks, I was getting 200-300/90!! About latency, I get 90-150+ on servers a few hundred miles north!

And tech support is basically a frickin nightmare, GTE denies any allogation of contracts with EarthLink which provide GTE with the responsibility of internet connections, EarthLink blames it on GTE and line distance (I'm 950 feet away from the CO)!

Think twice about getting GTE DSL! It's almost as bad as Covad and their apparent high level interleave scandal!

Looks like I caught this thread too late. I'm also in Hawaii and I'm getting DSL hopefully this week from flex. I can't sign up with them until tommorrow. Anyway, cable here (Mililani) just flat out sucks, for me at least. I ping 150ms average to the node at all times, even at 3am. The downloads have been getting bad lately and the uploads are horribly slow (under 10KB/sec). RR techs have come out to "check the signal" but that hasn't helped. I've called multiple times, and sent multiple e-mails but hasn't helped in correcting my problems. I finally just gave up on them and decided to get DSL. Anyway, for you other Hawaii users, I'll post what the pingtimes and download speeds are like if you want them. That probably won't be until next saturday.
