Disabling Firewall and Connection While Playing Games?

When I don't multiplay and just want to play with myself..he he.. I like to turn off my virus scanner and firewall for better performance. But, this leaves my system unprotected. What's the best way to disable
my connection short of unplugging the cable
line? What do you do?
