winroute or sygate

Hello all,

Who recommends what and why?
I have 3 machines at home going thru a win2k router that connects all of them to my cable connection. Looking to do stuff like port mapping, NAT, etc...
Just looking for suggestions.

Win2k's Internet Connection Sharing uses NAT. This is probably the easiest solution to sharing a connection especially since you already have win2k running.

Can it do Port mapping?
My primary machine is behind the firewall. I need it to be able to host things like a web server, roger wilco, netmeeting, etc...
I think that can be accomplished with port mapping yet I'm not sure how.

If you use standard apps and don't do anything fancy then ICS built into Win2K Pro is sufficient. But, if you frequently access services on nonstandard ports (like private FTP sites, etc..) or are trying to VPN out from internal clients on your network, then look elsewhere. Win2K Pro does NOT have full blown NAT but it is similar. Win2K Server has a more robust NAT in its Routing and Remote Access package, but it is a bitch to configure and you can't save and restore settings if you have to reinstall. Sygate is OK but is still buggy on Win2K. Recently, I downloaded WinRoute and it handled EVERYTHING right away... out of the box. All my apps work and I didn't have to modify ANYTHING to get non-standard ports working. I did have to do one tiny mod to get IPSEC PPTP VPN working, but hey at least it works. None of the other NAT tools can do this. On top of it all, it even has Web Proxy and you can enable rules-based firewall settings to lock down your connection while still having 100% service to your internal boxes. This is the best network package I have seen all year,and it's only 800k!

Thanks Guys,

I am now using NAT on win2k Adv Server but it has limitations.

Hamster I got Winroute D/L and I'll test it tonite. I imagine that I have to _disable_ ICS thru win2k and enable it thru Winroute?
In case I have more question, can I email you? or should we continue this here for the benefits of others?
